Survey Summary:
The tornado touched down just off of NC Highway 801 in Mount Ulla
at approximately 7:52 pm on April 11th, 2024 based on radar data
via Charlotte Terminal Doppler Radar. At the initial touch down,
the tornado uplifted a roof deck and loss significant roof
covering material. At the same location, a chimney collapsed,
while garage doors collapsed inward. The structure was displaced
off of its foundation. Tree trunks were snapped and uprooted as
well. The tornado then moved northeast across the intersection of
Back Creek Road and NC Highway 801, where several trees were
snapped or uprooted. A minute later, the tornado hit Mount Ulla
Elementary School, where metal sheeting from the gym building
peeled off, while very old wooden poles were broken, most likely
hit by metal roof that peeled off the gym building. The tornado
then crossed NC Highway 801 and Unberger Road, where large tree
branches were broken, plus sheet metal from the school lofted to
the nearby property, before the tornado lifted after traveling
just over a mile long path.
