121 FXUS65 KLKN 060928 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 228 AM PDT Mon May 6 2024 .SYNOPSIS...An upper-level disturbance will bring another round of precipitation and gusty winds along with isolated thunderstorms across northern Nevada Monday afternoon. Lingering showers will diminishing Tuesday with warm and dry conditions moving into the region for the latter part of the week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday night Snow showers are expected to taper off this morning for portions of Elko County and elevations above 6500 feet. After a brief break of dry weather, an upper-level disturbance and cold front approaches from the northwest Monday afternoon. This will bring another round of valley rain and mountain snow showers with isolated thunderstorms mainly across northern NV. 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected in the high mountain areas of Northern Elko County and the Ruby Mountains/E. Humboldt Range. Dry conditions prevail across central NV for much of the day. Winds will increase out of the west to 10-15 mph with gusts to 20-30 mph. Showers will linger for part of the day Tuesday as a broad long- wave trough encompasses over much of the western U.S. and northern plains. A northwest flow over the rest of the CWA bring quite and dry conditions under partly cloudy to mostly clear skies. Daytime high temperatures reside in the low 50s to low 60s with overnight lows in the low 20s to low 30s. Winds will be breezy to locally windy each afternoon with gusts of 20 to 30 mph in the windier locales. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday Generally quiet weather thru much of the period as a ridge of high pressure influences the region mid to late next week. That said, guidance continues to advertise a cut off low forming somewhere across the southwest U.S. as upper energy moves across Montana and south. This brings a low probability for afternoon rain showers and thunderstorms across portions of the forecast area beginning late this week and each day thru the weekend. Temperatures expected to warm the latter half of the week and thru the weekend with daytime highs reaching into the low 80s for some locales by Sunday. Afternoon winds remain breezy. && .AVIATION...VCSH present Monday morning at KEKO with the bulk of the showers remaining north of the terminal. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected with CIGs at 5KFT AGL and higher. Cold front begins moving into northern Nevada Monday night before midnight and VCSH is forecast at northern terminals KWMC, KBAM, and KEKO beginning around 05Z Tuesday. -SHRA and -SHSN expected at northern terminals beginning around midnight. Central Nevada terminals KTPH and KELY are expected to remain dry. Breezy winds Monday and Monday night with W-NW gusts 20-25 knots or higher at all terminals. KWMC remains AMD NOT SKED due to communication issue. && .HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across several streams, creeks, and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to seasonal snow melt. Modest increases have been noted in faster responding creeks and streams due to recent rainfall and snowfall. Increased flows may additionally be noted on other streams and rivers over the next several days. However, cool temperatures through the first half of the week will continue to help mitigate high elevation snow melt and subsequent runoff. The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain resides in action stage and is forecast remain in action stage for the next several days. The Humboldt River at Comus resides in minor flood stage and is forecast to remain in minor flood stage for the next few days while gradually decreasing. The river is forecast to fall into action stage mid week. Wildhorse Dam currently resides in action stage and is forecast to remain in action stage for the next several days. The Owyhee River near Mountain City resides near action stage. The river is forecast to continue to range in and out of action stage for the next several days. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
