...JUNE 2014 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

BY FAR AND AWAY...THE BIGGEST STORY OF THE MONTH WAS ABUNDANT
RAINFALL...AS HASTINGS NOTCHED ITS 5TH-WETTEST JUNE ON RECORD OUT OF
119 YEARS. NEEDLESS TO SAY...THIS RAIN LARGELY ERADICATED LINGERING
DROUGHT CONDITIONS ACROSS THE MAJORITY OF SOUTH CENTRAL
NEBRASKA...INCLUDING ADAMS COUNTY...WHICH BY MONTHS END WAS
ESSENTIALLY VOID OF ALL DROUGHT PER THE WEEKLY U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR.

FOCUSING ON JUNE PRECIPITATION IN MORE DETAIL...THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF
8.69 INCHES AT HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS A NOTABLE 4.89
INCHES ABOVE THE 30-YEAR JUNE NORMAL OF 3.80 INCHES. PUT ANOTHER
WAY...HASTINGS RECEIVED 229 PERCENT OF NORMAL JUNE
PRECIPITATION. THIS RESULTED IN THE 5TH-WETTEST JUNE ON RECORD OUT
OF 119 YEARS DATING TO 1896...AND WAS THE WETTEST JUNE SINCE 1975
FEATURED 8.97 INCHES. FORTUNATELY FOR FLOODING CONCERNS...THIS
PRECIPITATION SPACED ITSELF OUT FAIRLY EVENLY OVER THE COURSE OF THE
MONTH. THE HIGHEST CALENDAR-DAY TOTAL WAS 2.20 INCHES ON THE
21ST...WHICH COMBINED WITH 1.11 ON THE 20TH TO PRODUCE A HEFTY TWO-
DAY TOTAL OF 3.31 INCHES. OTHER NOTABLE DAILY TOTALS INCLUDED 1.13
INCHES ON THE 1ST AND 1.42 INCHES ON THE 14TH (WHICH WAS A DAILY
RECORD).

TEMPERATURE-WISE...IT WAS A FAIRLY TYPICAL AND NON-NEWSWORTHY JUNE
WITH THE MAJORITY OF HIGHS SOMEWHERE IN THE 80S AND THE MAJORITY OF
LOWS SOMEWHERE IN THE 60S. OVERALL THOUGH...IT WAS A VERY-SLIGHTLY
WARMER THAN NORMAL MONTH AS THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
(RESULTING FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS AND LOWS) WAS 72.2
DEGREES...MERELY 0.4 DEGREES ABOVE THE 30-YEAR NORMAL. OF THE 30
DAYS DURING THE MONTH...14 FEATURED AN ABOVE NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE...14 WERE BELOW NORMAL AND TWO DAYS MATCHED THE DAILY
NORMAL. ALTHOUGH NOT SIGNIFICANTLY COOL OR HOT BY ANY MEANS...THE
OVERALL-COOLEST AND WARMEST WEEKS OF THE MONTH OCCURRED NEARLY BACK-
TO-BACK BETWEEN THE 7TH-13TH AND THE 16TH-22ND. DURING THE COOLEST
WEEK FROM THE 7TH-13TH...SIX DAYS FAILED TO REACH 80
DEGREES...INCLUDING TWO DAYS THAT ONLY TOPPED OUT IN THE 60S. THIS
WEEK CONTAINED BOTH THE COOLEST LOW TEMPERATURE (51 ON THE 13TH) AND
COOLEST HIGH TEMPERATURE (66 ON THE 7TH) OF THE MONTH. IN
CONTRAST...DURING THE WARMEST WEEK FROM THE 16TH-22ND...FOUR OF
SEVEN DAYS REACHED AT LEAST 89 DEGREES. DURING THIS STRETCH...THE
18TH FEATURED THE HOTTEST MONTHLY HIGH TEMPERATURE (95) WHILE THE
17TH FEATURED THE MILDEST JUNE LOW (72)...WHICH TIED A DAILY RECORD.
BEYOND THE 20TH...THE MONTH ENDED WITH RATHER CONSISTENT
TEMPERATURES...AS EACH OF THE FINAL 10 DAYS FEATURED HIGHS SOMEWHERE
BETWEEN 78-87 DEGREES AND WITH LOWS IN THE 60S. THE MOST EXTREME
DAY-TO-DAY FLUCTUATION IN HIGH TEMPERATURES DURING JUNE WAS 19
DEGREES...FEATURING A NOTICEABLE COOL-DOWN FROM 85 DEGREES ON THE
6TH TO 66 DEGREES ON THE 7TH.

AS FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY...THE CITY AND ITS IMMEDIATE
VICINITY EXPERIENCED ITS FAIR SHARE DURING JUNE. MOST
NOTABLY...DAMAGING WINDS GUSTS RAKED HASTINGS TWICE WITHIN ONE
WEEK...AS THE AIRPORT MEASURED PEAK GUSTS OF 79 MPH ON THE LATE
EVENING OF THE 14TH AND 67 MPH ON THE EVENING OF THE 20TH. BOTH OF
THESE STORMS CAUSED MODEST TREE DAMAGE. EARLIER IN THE MONTH...A
VERY STRONG OUTFLOW BOUNDARY PRODUCED A 70 MPH GUST AT THE AIRPORT
DESPITE HASTINGS BEING LOCATED SEVERAL MILES SOUTH OF ANY ACTUAL
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. AS FOR LARGE HAIL...QUARTER TO GOLF BALL SIZE
STONES FELL MAINLY ON THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF TOWN ON THE 14TH. JUST A
FEW MILES SOUTHEAST OF HASTINGS ON THAT EVENING...VERY LARGE HAIL
RANGING FROM 2 TO 4 INCHES IN DIAMETER FELL AT THE HOME OF AN NWS
EMPLOYEE. A FEW DAYS PRIOR TO THIS ON THE EVENING OF THE 11TH...THE
NWS OFFICE LOCATED JUST NORTH OF HASTINGS RECEIVED HAIL UP TO THE
SIZE OF HALF DOLLARS...ALTHOUGH THE MAIN PART OF THE CITY WAS
SPARED. NO TORNADOES WERE REPORTED OR CONFIRMED WITHIN ADAMS COUNTY
DURING THIS MONTH...BUT THIS WAS A CLOSE CALL AS A FEW BRIEF
TOUCHDOWNS OCCURRED JUST OUTSIDE THE NORTHEAST TIP OF THE COUNTY IN
THE TRUMBULL AREA ON THE 14TH. INCLUDING THE AFOREMENTIONED VERY
STRONG WIND GUSTS ON THE 3RD...14TH AND 20TH...THERE WERE FIVE JUNE
DAYS THAT FEATURED PEAK GUSTS OF AT LEAST 45 MPH AT THE AIRPORT.
