THE SUMMER BEGAN WITH A PERIOD OF COOL, WET WEATHER. RAIN WAS
OBSERVED ON THE FIRST 6 DAYS OF THE MONTH, THOUGH IT DID NOT
ACCUMULATE TO MUCH. THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 46 DEGREES ON JUNE 6 WAS
THE COOLEST OF THE SUMMER. BUT A SHIFT TOWARD WARMER WEATHER SOON
OCCURRED, AND JUST 5 DAYS LATER THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE OF THE
SUMMER WAS RECORDED WHEN AUGUSTA REACHED 91 DEGREES ON JUNE 11 AND
12. THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS FEATURED ALTERNATING PERIODS OF WARMER
AND COOLER WEATHER, WITH THE MOST PERSISTENT WARMTH COMING IN MID
JULY. A COLD FRONT BROUGHT ABOUT A WEEK OF COOLER WEATHER BEGINNING
ON JULY 23. AUGUST BROUGHT A FEW MORE STRETCHES OF WARM WEATHER,
PERIODICALLY BROKEN UP BY A FEW DAYS OF COOLER WEATHER AND SHOWERS.
A FRONTAL SYSTEM ON AUGUST 18 BROUGHT MORE THAN AN INCH OF RAINFALL,
THE HEAVIEST RAIN OF THE SUMMER. MORE FALL-LIKE WEATHER BEGAN
ARRIVING TOWARD THE END OF AUGUST WITH COOL AND DRY CONDITIONS IN
PLACE FOR THE FINAL WEEK OF THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE SUMMER WAS 67.2 DEGREES WHICH WAS
ONLY 0.1 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE COOLEST SUMMER ON RECORD WAS IN
1968 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS ONLY 63.7 DEGREES. THE WARMEST
WAS IN 1973 WHEN IT WAS 71.2 DEGREES.

A TOTAL OF 6.24 INCHES OF RAIN FELL WHICH WAS 4.05 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL AND THE DRIEST SUMMER SINCE 1999. THE HEAVIEST RAIN WAS ON
AUGUST 18 WHEN 1.12 INCHES WAS RECORDED. THE DRIEST SUMMER ON RECORD
WAS IN 1949 WHEN ONLY 4.76 INCHES OF RAIN WAS RECORDED. THE WETTEST
WAS IN 2009 WITH 18.94 INCHES. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE DRIEST
