...THE FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM AKDT SATURDAY
FOR A GLACIAL DAMMED LAKE OUTBURST FOR THE MENDENHALL LAKE AND
MENDENHALL RIVER IN JUNEAU...

BASED ON STRENGTHENING EVIDENCE OF FASTER RATES OF WATER RELEASE
FROM THE GLACIER INTO THE LAKE...THE MENDENHALL RIVER AND MENDENHALL
LAKE ARE NOW PROJECTED TO RISE HIGHER AND MORE QUICKLY THAN EARLIER
FORECASTS WITH HIGHEST WATER LEVELS POSSIBLY AS SOON AS MID-FRIDAY
AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF FRIDAY EVENING.

AT 915 PM AKDT...THE MENDENHALL LAKE LEVEL WAS 7.9 FEET. THE LAKE IS
NOW PROJECTED TO RISE ANOTHER FOUR FEET OR SO IN THE NEXT 18 HOURS
TO CREST AT APPROXIMATELY 12.0 FEET AROUND 4 PM FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
THE MENDENHALL RIVER LEVEL AT 9 PM THURSDAY WAS 9.9 FEET. THE RIVER
IS FORECAST TO RISE ANOTHER 5 FEET IN THE NEXT 18 HOURS TO CREST AT
APPROXIMATELY 15.0 FEET AROUND 4 PM FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

THE PREDICTED FLOOD LEVELS ARE AROUND ONE FOOT ABOVE RECORD
FLOOD LEVELS ON THE MENDENHALL RIVER AND MENDENHALL LAKE AND AROUND
ONE FOOT ABOVE THE HIGHEST WATER LEVELS THAT OCCURRED DURING THE
2011 GLACIER FLOOD EVENT.

BASED ON THE NEW FORECASTS...MINOR FLOODING WILL BEGIN IN THE
MENDENHALL CAMPGROUND AND ALONG WEST GLACIER SPUR ROAD LATE THURSDAY
NIGHT. IN ADDITION...YARDS AND PROPERTY OF HOMES ALONG VIEW DRIVE
WILL BEGIN INUNDATION LATE THURSDAY NIGHT. MODERATE FLOODING IS
FORECAST TO BEGIN EARLY FRIDAY MORNING WITH VIEW DRIVE FLOODING AND
BECOMING IMPASSABLE. IN ADDITION AS MUCH AS 3 FEET OF WATER WILL
COVER LOW AREAS OF THE MENDENHALL CAMPGROUND AND 1.5 FEET OF WATER
COVERING THE WEST GLACIER SPUR ROAD. ADJACENT LOW-LYING AREAS NEARBY
THE RIVER THAT AVOIDED FLOODING FROM THE 2011 EVENT ARE AT RISK FOR
FLOODING FROM THIS EVENT WITH HIGHER WATER LEVELS PROJECTED.

PROPERTY OWNERS ALONG THE LOWER MENDENHALL RIVER SHOULD BE AWARE THAT
THERE IS A HIGH TIDE OF 15 FEET AT 1 PM FRIDAY. BACKWATER FROM THE
HIGH TIDE WILL MAKE THE RIVER LEVEL HIGHER THAN JUST FROM THE THE
FLOOD ALONE. THIS WILL INCREASE THE RISK OF BANK EROSION ALL ALONG
THE MENDENHALL.

A FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED.
PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS IMMEDIATELY.

REPEATING...THE MENDENHALL LAKE LEVEL IS NOW FORECAST TO CREST AT
12.0 FEET AND THE MENDENHALL RIVER IS NOW FORECAST TO CREST AT 15.0
FEET AROUND 4 PM FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THE FOREST SERVICE HAS CLOSED THE
MENDENHALL CAMPGROUND AND PLANS TO TEMPORARILY EVACUATE CAMPERS
THURSDAY NIGHT.

A FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED.
STREAM RISES WILL BE SLOW AND FLASH FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED.
HOWEVER...ALL INTERESTED PARTIES SHOULD TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS
IMMEDIATELY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS
SAFELY. MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.
