FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
230 PM PDT MON SEP 15 2014

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT PDT TONIGHT...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...DRY AND SOMEWHAT UNSTABLE CONDITIONS WILL
CONTINUE THROUGH TONIGHT. AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL BRING A
RETURN TO ONSHORE FLOW AND RESULT IN A SLIM THREAT OF THUNDERSTORMS
THIS EVENING INTO TUESDAY MORNING. A STRONGER TROUGH MAY BRING SOME
PRECIPITATION WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY. SUMMER RETURNS OVER THE
WEEKEND.

.DISCUSSION...DRY CONDITIONS AND MID-LEVEL INSTABILITY WILL PERSIST
THROUGH TONIGHT. THE SURFACE THERMAL TROUGH WAS CENTERED OVER THE
WILLAMETTE VALLEY AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON LOWLANDS EARLY THIS
AFTERNOON. IT IS EXPECTED TO SLOWLY DRIFT TO THE CASCADES BY
EVENING. EAST WIND WILL REMAIN RATHER LOCALIZED THROUGH THE
EVENING...GENERALLY CONFINED TO THE WEST END OF THE COLUMBIA GORGE
AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF ZONE 660. THE NEXT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER
CONCERN WILL BE THE SLIM THREAT OF LIGHTNING THIS EVENING. AN UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH OFF THE SOUTH OREGON AND NORTH CALIFORNIA COAST THIS
AFTERNOON WILL CONTINUE TO DRIFT NORTH TO NORTHEAST THIS EVENING AND
TONIGHT. THIS FEATURE WILL INDUCE A SWITCH TO ONSHORE LOW-LEVEL
FLOW. THE RED FLAG WARNING WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT THROUGH MIDNIGHT
DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF MID-LEVEL HAINES 6...CRITICALLY DRY FUELS
AND THE THREAT OF DRY LIGHTNING. STRONGER ONSHORE FLOW OVERNIGHT
SHOULD REDUCE THE MID-LEVEL INSTABILITY. A STRONGER SYSTEM IMPACTS
THE AREA LATE WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. RAINFALL AMOUNTS REMAIN
SOMEWHAT QUESTIONABLE...BUT THE NORTHERN ZONES STAND THE BEST CHANCE
OF GETTING WETTING RAIN AMOUNTS. THERE WILL ALSO BE A THREAT OF WET
THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE OREGON CASCADE ZONES LATE WEDNESDAY DUE TO
THE MOIST AND UNSTABLE SOUTH FLOW ALOFT. LONGER RANGE CHARTS SHOW
WARMER AND DRIER CONDITIONS RETURNING OVER THE WEEKEND.

$$

***THUNDERSTORMS IMPLY STRONG GUSTY WINDS***
***WINDS ARE 20 FOOT 10 MINUTE AVERAGES***
***CWR-CHANCE OF WETTING RAIN 0.25 OR GREATER***
