730 FNUS54 KMAF 181902 FWFMAF Fire Weather Planning Forecast for West Texas/Southeast New Mexico National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX 202 PM CDT Sat May 18 2024 .DISCUSSION... With upper level ridging, southerly surface flow and a sharpening dryline, sunny skies and min RH well below critical 15% level, in addition to poor overnight recovery and critically dry fuels southwest of the Pecos River, all result in fire risk this weekend into next week. While light winds should limit fire weather concerns, an early season heatwave, min RH in single digits, and ERCs at or above 90th percentile from Southeast New Mexico into the Big Bend will increase fire risk. Except for Sunday over Southeast New Mexico, RFTIs remain below 5, with highest fire weather concerns in westernmost regions where driest fuels exist. Even with a trough and cold front next week, ridging builds back and little to no rain is expected, so fire weather concerns continue into end of next week. && For point-specific forecasts please see the Point Fire Weather Matrix product issued by the Midland/Odessa National Weather Service Office.
