Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
110 PM PDT Tue Apr 30 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Gusty west to northwest winds continue this afternoon
across central and northern Nevada. A cold front tonight will
usher in colder air into the area tomorrow with highs only
reaching into the 40s and 50s along with isolated showers across
portions of northeastern Nevada. Another disturbance will bring
light shower activity to northeastern Nevada again on Thursday
with potential for widespread rain and mountain snow coming up for
the weekend into early next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night. Skies are mostly
sunny this afternoon through some high clouds can be seen moving
across the forecast area. Afternoon breezes will continue through
the early evening before diminishing. Dry and quiet conditions
will persist during the overnight though clouds will be on the
increase during the morning hours Wednesday in advance of the next
system. This system will bring a cold front to the area. Not much
in the way of precipitation is expected but it will bring in some
colder air to the area. Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s.

For Wednesday and Wednesday night, northwest flow will keep a lid
on temperatures for tomorrow. Northwest winds will once again be
breezy to locally windy with speeds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of
35 to 40 mph. Highs will only reach into the 50s in the north to
60s in central Nevada. Look for dry conditions through the
overnight with lows in the 20s and 30s.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday

On-and-off again weather activity continues in the late week with
another active weather pattern over the weekend, followed by more
quiet weather early next week.

Thursday, quiet weather is expected in the early day with high
temperatures reaching into 60s to 70s, however, some areas in
northern Nevada are expected to have highs in the 40s as a low
pressure system north of Nevada is expected to increase chances
for weather up to 40% by the afternoon. Breezy westerly winds are
expected in the afternoon from a near zonal flow pattern,
increasing winds up to 15-20 mph.

Friday, a brief lull in weather sets in over the silver state,
making high temperatures in the upper 50s to 70s across the state
and lows in the 30s to 40s. Winds are also expected to be calmer
with speeds at or below 10 mph.

The weekend, models are showing the development of another low
pressure system moving over the western U.S. however confidence is
low on the position of this storm. The weather pattern is expected
to increase chances for precipitation to 20-40% for central Nevada
and 50-70% for northern Nevada with the chance of snow at higher
elevations and mountains. Highs on Saturday is expected to be in
the 60s to 70s with lows in the 30s to 40s, with temperatures
Sunday expected to be cooler as the cold front passes with highs
in the 40s to 50s and lows in the 30s. Saturday winds expected to
increase in the day from the south at 20-30 mph with strongest
winds in central Nevada. Sunday winds expected to be breezy as
well, but at 15-20 mph. By Sunday evening into Monday morning, the
weather pattern is expected to dissipate.

Monday and Tuesday is expected to see calmer weather as the
low pressure system moves east, however chances for precipitation
remain for northern Nevada both days up to 25%. High temperatures
expected to reach back into the 60s to 70s for central Nevada both
days with northern Nevada expected to stay cooler in the 50s to
low 60s. Lows each night expected to be in the 30s to 40s. Breezy
westerly winds expected in the afternoons at 10-15 mph.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions expected over the next 24 hour period
at all terminals. Gusty winds up to 20-25 kts expected at all
terminals in the afternoon and dissipate in the evening with the
exception of KTPH expecting gusty winds at 20-25 kts overnight.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across several streams,
creeks, and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to
continued snow melt. Colder temperatures, mostly in the 20s, are
expected tonight and Wednesday night with high probabilities of
near 100% of falling to or below freezing which will inhibit rapid
snow melt. Dry conditions are expected across northern Nevada
today. A cold front associated with a weather disturbance will
bring a few showers to northeastern Nevada Wednesday afternoon but
will be insignificant in terms of hydrology.

The Bruneau River is currently in action stage and is expected to
fluctuate around action stage through today.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain is currently in minor flood

The Humboldt River at Comus is currently oscillating near minor
flood stage and is forecast to gradually rise in the coming days,

The Owyhee River near Wildhorse is currently in action stage and
is forecast to gradually fall over the next several days,
remaining in action stage.
