...DEEPENING DROUGHT IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY AND EXTREME SOUTHERN INDIANA...

SYNOPSIS...

SEVERE DROUGHT HAS SPREAD THROUGHOUT ALL OF CENTRAL KENTUCKY WITH
THE EXCEPTION OF TRIMBLE COUNTY. SEVERE DROUGHT HAS ALSO SPREAD
INTO SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE INDIANA COUNTIES OF HARRISON, FLOYD,
AND CLARK.

PRECIPITATION TOTALS ARE RUNNING BELOW NORMAL FOR THE CALENDAR
YEAR, WITH THE DEGREE OF DRYNESS ACCELERATING SIGNIFICANTLY OVER
THE PAST 60 DAYS. DURING THAT TIME SOUTHERN KENTUCKY HAS RECEIVED
THE LEAST RAINFALL IN THE AREA. THE COUNTIES OF LOGAN, CUMBERLAND,
ADAIR, AND RUSSELL HAVE BEEN PARTICULARLY DRY.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...

BURN BANS ARE IN EFFECT IN 34 COUNTIES IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY AND 5
COUNTIES IN CENTRAL SOUTHERN INDIANA.

A LEVEL I DROUGHT DECLARATION HAS BEEN MADE BY THE COMMONWEALTH OF
KENTUCKY.

THOUGH THERE HAVE BEEN NO MAJOR FIRES IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY, OVER
TWO DOZEN FIRES HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN OTHER PARTS OF THE
STATE...ESPECIALLY IN THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS AND FOOTHILLS.
OVER 26,000 ACRES HAVE BURNED SINCE THE DROUGHT BEGAN IN EASTERN
KENTUCKY.

FIRE DANGER IS MODERATE IN SOUTHERN INDIANA AND MODERATE TO HIGH
IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY.

ACROSS KENTUCKY 76 PERCENT OF TOPSOIL MOISTURE IS SHORT OR VERY
SHORT. 71 PERCENT OF SUBSOIL MOISTURE IS SHORT OR VERY SHORT.

SOME CATTLE PRODUCERS HAVE BEEN FEEDING HAY AND SUPPLEMENTAL GRAIN EARLY
BECAUSE PASTURES ARE NOT GROWING. WET WEATHER LAST SPRING AND
SUMMER REDUCED HAY QUALITY AND QUANTITY, LEAVING LITTLE GOOD HAY
TO BE FOUND. SOME LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS ARE HAVING TO HAUL WATER AS
THEIR FARM PONDS DRY UP.

THE PUBLIC SHOULD ALWAYS CHECK WITH LOCAL OFFICIALS BEFORE
ATTEMPTING ANY OUTSIDE BURNING. CITIZENS MAY BE LIABLE FOR
DAMAGES AND SUPPRESSION COSTS OF ANY WILDFIRE THEY START.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...

ONLY ABOUT A TENTH OF AN INCH OF RAIN HAS FALLEN ON SOUTHERN
KENTUCKY OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS...AND LESS THAN AN INCH OVER THE
PAST TWO MONTHS. BOWLING GREEN HAS EXPERIENCED ITS DRIEST OCTOBER
1 - NOVEMBER 15 PERIOD ON RECORD, WITH ONLY 0.58" OF RAIN DURING
THAT TIME (THE OLD RECORD WAS 0.71" SET IN 1964).

OVER THE PAST 30 DAYS THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE REGION IS
ABOUT 6 DEGREES WARMER THAN NORMAL.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...

A COLD FRONT WILL BRING WIDESPREAD SHOWERS FRIDAY NIGHT, BUT THE
FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH QUICKLY. GENERAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF A
QUARTER TO HALF INCH ARE EXPECTED.

ANOTHER FRONT WILL COME THROUGH MID WEEK NEXT WEEK AND MAY PROVIDE
ANOTHER QUARTER TO THIRD OF AN INCH OF RAIN.

THE PRECIPITATION OUTLOOK FOR NOVEMBER 25 THROUGH DECEMBER 1 CALLS
FOR ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION. THE OUTLOOK FOR DECEMBER THROUGH
FEBRUARY ALSO SHOWS A CHANCE OF ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION.

TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO AVERAGE ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE REST OF
NOVEMBER.

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...

MOST STREAMS ARE BELOW OR MUCH BELOW NORMAL. THE WEST FORK OF
DRAKES CREEK NEAR FRANKLIN KENTUCKY IS AT 9 PERCENT OF ITS NORMAL
MEAN FLOW.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED WHEN A MAJOR CHANGE IN DROUGHT
STATUS TAKES PLACE. THAT INCLUDES A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE AREA
COVERED BY SEVERE DROUGHT...AN INCREASE IN THE DROUGHT SEVERITY
LEVEL...OR ERADICATION OF THE SEVERE DROUGHT.

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED AT LEAST ONCE PER MONTH REGARDLESS OF
CHANGES IN DROUGHT STATUS UNTIL THE SEVERE DROUGHT HAS ENDED.
