...EXTREME DROUGHT HAS DEVELOPED OVER SOUTHEAST PORTIONS OF
CENTRAL KENTUCKY INCLUDING THE LAKE CUMBERLAND REGION...

...FIRST EXTREME DROUGHT IN THAT AREA SINCE DECEMBER 2008...

SYNOPSIS...

SEVERE DROUGHT COVERS CENTRAL KENTUCKY AND EXTENDS JUST ACROSS THE
OHIO RIVER INTO CENTRAL PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN INDIANA. IN THE PAST
WEEK THE DROUGHT HAS INCREASED IN SEVERITY TO "EXTREME" LEVELS IN
SOUTHERN KENTUCKY ROUGHLY ALONG AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM
SCOTTSVILLE TO EDMONTON TO LIBERTY.

PRECIPITATION TOTALS ARE RUNNING BELOW NORMAL FOR THE CALENDAR
YEAR, WITH THE DEGREE OF DRYNESS ACCELERATING SIGNIFICANTLY OVER
THE PAST 60 DAYS. DURING THAT TIME SOUTHERN KENTUCKY HAS RECEIVED
THE LEAST RAINFALL IN THE AREA. THE COUNTIES OF LOGAN, BARREN, AND
METCALFE HAVE BEEN PARTICULARLY DRY.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...

BURN BANS ARE IN EFFECT IN 38 COUNTIES IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY AND 5
COUNTIES IN CENTRAL SOUTHERN INDIANA.

A LEVEL I DROUGHT DECLARATION HAS BEEN MADE BY THE COMMONWEALTH OF
KENTUCKY.

THERE HAVE BEEN NO MAJOR FIRES IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY DURING THIS
DROUGHT. FIRES IN EASTERN KENTUCKY HAVE BEEN DECREASING, BUT
NEARLY 50,000 ACRES HAVE ALREADY BURNED.

FIRE DANGER IS MODERATE THROUGH MOST OF THE DISTRICT. FIRE DANGER
IS STILL HIGH IN MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK.

ACROSS KENTUCKY 76 PERCENT OF TOPSOIL MOISTURE IS SHORT OR VERY
SHORT. 71 PERCENT OF SUBSOIL MOISTURE IS SHORT OR VERY SHORT.

SOME CATTLE PRODUCERS HAVE BEEN FEEDING HAY AND SUPPLEMENTAL GRAIN EARLY
BECAUSE PASTURES ARE NOT GROWING. WET WEATHER LAST SPRING AND
SUMMER REDUCED HAY QUALITY AND QUANTITY, LEAVING LITTLE GOOD HAY
TO BE FOUND. SOME LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS ARE HAVING TO HAUL WATER AS
THEIR FARM PONDS DRY UP.

THE PUBLIC SHOULD ALWAYS CHECK WITH LOCAL OFFICIALS BEFORE
ATTEMPTING ANY OUTSIDE BURNING. CITIZENS MAY BE LIABLE FOR
DAMAGES AND SUPPRESSION COSTS OF ANY WILDFIRE THEY START.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...

A COLD FRONT BROUGHT TWO TO FOUR TENTHS OF AN INCH OF RAIN TO THE
DROUGHT STRICKEN AREA ON NOVEMBER 18. IT WAS ONE OF THE WETTEST
DAYS OF THE MONTH BUT HAD LITTLE IMPACT ON THE DROUGHT.

BOWLING GREEN HAS EXPERIENCED ITS DRIEST OCTOBER
1 - NOVEMBER 22 PERIOD ON RECORD, WITH ONLY 0.79" OF RAIN DURING
THAT TIME (THE OLD RECORD WAS 0.99" SET IN 1894).

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...

SCATTERED SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO BRING ONE TO FIVE TENTHS OF AN
INCH OF RAIN TO THE REGION TODAY AND TONIGHT.

NEXT MONDAY AND TUESDAY...THE 28TH AND 29TH...SEVERAL DISTURBANCES
ARE PREDICTED TO CROSS THE REGION AND MAY BRING ONE TO TWO INCHES
OF BENEFICIAL RAINS.

THROUGH DECEMBER 6 CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE WETTER AND WARMER
THAN NORMAL. THERE IS ABOUT A 34 PERCENT CHANCE THAT THE WINTER
WILL BE WETTER THAN NORMAL.

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...

MOST STREAMS ARE BELOW OR MUCH BELOW NORMAL. THE ROLLING FORK
RIVER NEAR BOSTON KENTUCKY HAS ONLY A LITTLE OVER TWO FEET OF
WATER IN IT WHICH IS 2.2 PERCENT OF ITS NORMAL MEAN FLOW.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED WHEN A MAJOR CHANGE IN DROUGHT
STATUS TAKES PLACE. THAT INCLUDES A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE AREA
COVERED BY SEVERE DROUGHT...AN INCREASE IN THE DROUGHT SEVERITY
LEVEL...OR ERADICATION OF THE SEVERE DROUGHT.

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED AT LEAST ONCE PER MONTH REGARDLESS OF
CHANGES IN DROUGHT STATUS UNTIL THE SEVERE DROUGHT HAS ENDED.
