...DROUGHT LOOSENING ITS GRIP...

SYNOPSIS...

THE AREA OF EXTREME DROUGHT (D3) THAT HAD BEEN IN PLACE OVER
SOUTHEASTERN SECTIONS OF CENTRAL KENTUCKY HAS IMPROVED TO SEVERE
DROUGHT (D2).

SOUTHERN INDIANA HAS IMPROVED FROM SEVERE DROUGHT TO MODERATE
DROUGHT (D1).

SEVERE DROUGHT CONTINUES IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY ROUGHLY SOUTHEAST OF
A LINE FROM HARTFORD TO SHEPHERDSVILLE TO FRANKFORT.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...

THERE ARE NO LONGER ANY WILDFIRES OR ANY COUNTY BURN BANS IN
EFFECT.

A LEVEL I DROUGHT DECLARATION CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE
COMMONWEALTH.

FIRE DANGER IS MODERATE.

76 PERCENT OF TOPSOIL MOISTURE IS STILL SHORT OR VERY SHORT ACROSS
KENTUCKY.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...

ACCUMULATED PRECIPITATION OVER THE PAST 180 DAYS IS NEAR NORMAL
FOR THE DROUGHT REGION BUT IS RUNNING WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR THE
PAST 90 DAYS AND SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL FOR THE PAST 30 DAYS.

OVER THE PAST MONTH, AREAS FROM BARDSTOWN AND LAWRENCEBURG
NORTHEASTWARD TO GEORGETOWN HAVE BEEN THE DRIEST. THE LAKE
CUMBERLAND/ DALE HOLLOW REGION, ON THE OTHER HAND, HAS EXPERIENCED
SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL. THE LAKE CUMBERLAND AREA WAS
PARTICULARLY HARD HIT BY THE DROUGHT, SO THE RAINS IN THAT
DISTRICT ARE DEFINITELY GOOD NEWS.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...

A COMPLEX STORM SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BRING WIDESPREAD RAINS TO
THE ENTIRE REGION FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY (DECEMBER 16-17),
POSSIBLY ENDING AS A WINTRY MIX OR LIGHT SNOW SATURDAY NIGHT INTO
SUNDAY MORNING (DECEMBER 17-18). AN INCH TO AS MUCH AS AN INCH AND
A HALF OF PRECIPITATION IS PREDICTED (ONLY A DUSTING OF SNOW).
SOME OF THE LARGEST RAINFALL AMOUNTS ARE FORECAST TO OCCUR RIGHT
IN THE AREA OF SEVERE DROUGHT.

OUTLOOKS THROUGH THE FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY ARE CALLING FOR ABOVE
NORMAL PRECIPITATION AND TEMPERATURES.

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...

SOME STREAMS, SUCH AS BEECH FORK, ROLLING FORK, AND THE KENTUCKY
RIVER, HAVE RETURNED TO NORMAL. HOWEVER MANY OTHER STREAMS ARE
STILL VERY LOW, ESPECIALLY IN SOUTHERN KENTUCKY.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED WHEN A MAJOR CHANGE IN DROUGHT
STATUS TAKES PLACE. THAT INCLUDES A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE AREA
COVERED BY SEVERE DROUGHT...AN INCREASE IN THE DROUGHT SEVERITY
LEVEL...OR ERADICATION OF THE SEVERE DROUGHT.

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED AT LEAST ONCE PER MONTH REGARDLESS OF
CHANGES IN DROUGHT STATUS UNTIL THE SEVERE DROUGHT HAS ENDED.

&&
