...JANUARY 2015 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

ALTHOUGH THE MONTH AS A WHOLE AVERAGED A FEW DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL
AND PRECIPITATION FELL JUST SHORT OF NORMAL...THE TWO MOST MEMORABLE
WEATHER ASPECTS OF THE MONTH WERE:

1) A MAJOR TEMPERATURE TURN-AROUND: FOLLOWING 13 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF
BELOW NORMAL COLD TO START THE MONTH...THINGS CHANGED IN A MAJOR WAY
AS THE FINAL 17 DAYS OF THE MONTH ALL FEATURED ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPS...INCLUDING A PARTICULARLY MILD 3-DAY STRETCH FROM THE 26TH-
28TH.

2) BONE-DRY UNTIL THE VERY LAST DAY: RIGHT UP UNTIL THE
31ST...HASTINGS WAS STARING AT THE 9TH-DRIEST JANUARY ON RECORD (OUT
OF 119) WITH A MEASLY TOTAL OF ONLY 0.07 INCHES. THEN AT THE "LAST
MINUTE" ON THE 31ST...A SIGNIFICANT STORM SYSTEM ENDED THE MONTH ON
A RAINY THEN SNOWY NOTE...WITH THE DAILY PRECIPITATION TOTAL OF 0.70
INCHES BLOWING AWAY ANY NOTION OF HASTINGS HAVING ONE OF THE DRIEST
MONTHS OF JANUARY ON RECORD. IN FACT...IT ENDED UP BEING THE 30TH-
WETTEST ON RECORD.

FOCUSING ON TEMPERATURES IN MORE DETAIL...THE OVERALL AVERAGE
MONTHLY TEMPERATURE (RESULTING FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS AND
LOWS) WAS 29.0 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 3.0 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE
MAJORITY OF THE ABOVE NORMAL AVERAGE STEMMED FROM DAILY
HIGHS...WHICH AVERAGED A FAIRLY SIGNIFICANT 5.7 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL.
AS OUTLINED ABOVE...IT WAS A UNIQUE MONTH WITH EACH OF THE FIRST 13
DAYS AVERAGING BELOW NORMAL AND EACH OF THE LAST 17 DAYS ABOVE
NORMAL...WITH A SINGLE TRANSITION DAY IN BETWEEN (ON THE 14TH) THAT
EQUALED ITS DAILY AVERAGE. STARTING WITH THE EARLY-MONTH COLD
SNAP...COUNTING THE FINAL FIVE DAYS OF DECEMBER THIS ACTUALLY ENDED
UP BEING AN IMPRESSIVE 18-DAY STRETCH OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES.
MORE SPECIFICALLY...THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE FROM DEC. 27-JAN.
14 WAS ONLY 15.5 DEGREES...MARKING THE COLDEST STRETCH OF WEATHER
BETWEEN THOSE PARTICULAR DATES IN FIVE YEARS. DURING THIS FIRST PART
OF JANUARY...THE OVERALL-COLDEST WEEK WAS CENTERED FROM THE 3RD-
9TH...DURING WHICH HIGH TEMPERATURES ON FIVE OF THE SEVEN DAYS
FAILED TO EXCEED 26 DEGREES. THIS INCLUDED THE OVERALL-COLDEST DAY
OF THE MONTH ON THE 4TH...WITH A HIGH OF ONLY 11 AND A LOW OF -2.
ONCE THE TEMPERATURE PATTERN CHANGED...IT DID SO IN A MAJOR WAY AS
11 OF THE LAST 17 DAYS REACHED AT LEAST 50 DEGREES...AND A
REMARKABLE THREE-DAY STRETCH FROM THE 26TH-28TH FEATURED HIGHS
BETWEEN 65-69 DEGREES...WITH THE HIGH OF 69 ON THE 28TH TYING A
DAILY RECORD. MORE IMPRESSIVELY...THE THREE-DAY AVERAGE HIGH
TEMPERATURE OF 66.7 DEGREES MARKED THE SECOND-WARMEST THREE-DAY
STRETCH OF JANUARY HIGH TEMPERATURES ON RECORD...TRAILING ONLY A
68.3 AVERAGE FROM JAN. 22-24, 1981 (34 YEARS AGO). THE MOST EXTREME
DAY-TO-DAY CHANGE IN HIGH TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTH WAS A 30-
DEGREE WARM-UP FROM 13 TO 43 DEGREES FROM THE 7TH TO 8TH.

TURNING TO JANUARY PRECIPITATION...THE TOTAL OF 0.77 INCHES AT
HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS 0.36 INCHES ABOVE THE 30-YEAR NORMAL
OF 0.41 INCHES...AND ACTUALLY MARKED THE WETTEST JANUARY SINCE 2011
(1.00 INCHES). AS OUTLINED ABOVE...THE VAST MAJORITY OF MONTHLY
PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE VERY LAST DAY AS RAIN TRANSITIONED TO 4.5
INCHES OF SNOW...EQUATING TO 0.70 INCHES OF TOTAL DAILY
PRECIPITATION AND SETTING A NEW DAILY RECORD FOR THE 31ST (NOTE:
COUNTING THE PRECIPITATION THAT CONTINUED INTO FEB. 1ST THE STORM-
TOTAL PRECIPITATION WAS 0.80 INCHES AND 6.4 INCHES OF SNOW). PRIOR
TO THE 31ST...THE ONLY MEASURABLE LIQUID-EQUIVALENT OF THE MONTH WAS
0.07 INCHES ON THE 3RD. AS FOR SNOWFALL...THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF 5.7
INCHES FELL MERELY 0.3 INCHES SHORT OF THE 30-YEAR NORMAL OF 6.0
INCHES. THROUGH THE END OF JANUARY...TOTAL SNOWFALL FOR THE 2014-15
SEASON STOOD AT 10.8 INCHES...WHICH WAS 5.1 INCHES BELOW THE 30-YEAR
NORMAL.

NO THUNDERSTORMS AFFECTED HASTINGS DURING THE MONTH. AS FOR DAY-TO-
DAY WIND...ALTHOUGH THERE WAS PLENTY OF TYPICAL JANUARY BREEZE IT
WAS NOT AN OVERLY-WINDY MONTH. IN STARK CONTRAST TO LAST YEAR THERE
WERE NO SEVERELY-WINDY DAYS. ONLY ONE DAY FEATURED PEAK
NORTHWESTERLY WIND GUST AS HIGH AS 50 MPH...WHICH OCCURRED DURING
THE PRE-DAWN OF THE 29TH. IN TOTAL...NINE JANUARY DAYS FEATURED PEAK
NORTHWESTERLY GUSTS OF AT LEAST 40 MPH.
