HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION

...FLOOD POTENTIAL...

A FLOOD WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR FORT YUKON ON THE PORCUPINE RIVER.
A FLOOD WATCH FOR THE PORCUPINE RIVER HAS BEEN UPDATED TO INCLUDE
THE REACH FROM THE MOUTH OF THE PORCUPINE RIVER TO THE MOUTH OF THE
COLEEN RIVER UNTIL SUNDAY AFTERNOON. VERY WARM TEMPERATURES HAVE
DRAMATICALLY INCREASED SNOW MELT...RESULTING IN BANKFULL OR OVER
BANKFULL CONDITIONS.

YUKON RIVER... HIGH WATER CONTINUES FOR ALAKANUK AND EMMONAK... AND
WATER LEVELS REMAIN STEADY. SATELLITE IMAGES CONTINUE TO DEPICT SOME
ICE REMAINING IN THE DELTA REGION. THE REST OF THE YUKON RIVER IS
OPEN.

WATER IS FLOWING OVER PORTIONS OF THE DALTON HIGHWAY BETWEEN
MILEPOSTS 394 AND THE DEADHORSE AIRPORT. THE ROAD REMAINS CLOSED
BETWEEN MILE 334 AN 413 AND IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN CLOSED THROUGH
NEXT WEEK.  A FLOOD WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED UNTIL 415 PM SUNDAY.
SINCE WEDNESDAY WATER LEVELS IN THE VICINITY OF THE DEADHORSE
AIRPORT HAVE DROPPED.

THE FLOOD ADVISORY FOR THE COLVILLE AND KUPARUK RIVERS WILL BE
ALLOWED TO CONTINUE AT LEAST FOR ONE MORE DAY AS WATER LEVELS
CONTINUE TO RECEDE. THE OBSERVER AT COLVILLE VILLAGE REPORTS THAT
THE RIVER PEAKED LAST EVENING AT 11PM AND CONTINUES TO FALL. ON THE
KUPARUK... 3 LOW WATER CROSSING ARE INUNDATED WITH WATER AND MAKING
TRAVEL ALONG THE SPINE ROAD DIFFICULT.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EVEN THOUGH A RIVER REACH MAY BE LABELED OPEN OR
MOSTLY OPEN... IT IS STILL POSSIBLE FOR ICE RUNS FROM UPSTREAM TO
PASS THROUGH THESE REACHES AND MAKE TRAVEL UNSAFE.

THE STRONG UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC AND WESTERN
NORTH AMERICA HAS SHIFTED SLIGHTLY EAST AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO
WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOW IN THE EASTERN BERING SEA BY SATURDAY
EVENING. THERE ARE SEVERAL SHORT WAVES ENTRENCHED IN THE SOUTHERLY
FLOW THAT CARRIES MOISTURE FROM THE REMNANTS OF TYPHOON DOLPHIN.
MUCH NEEDED RAIN IS ANTICIPATED ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTHWEST AND
SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA AS THE ASSOCIATED FRONT MOVING ACROSS THE
REGION.

THE 6 TO 10 DAY TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK HAS INCREASED CHANCES OF ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES OVER THE ENTIRE STATE.

THE 6 TO 10 DAY PRECIPITATION OUTLOOK HAS INCREASED CHANCES FOR BELOW NORMAL
PRECIPITATION OVER MOST OF SOUTHEASTERN MAINLAND AND THE PANHANDLE
OF ALASKA.
