RANGELAND FIRE DANGER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SIOUX FALLS SD
428 PM CDT WED APR 23 2014

...CRITICAL FIRE BEHAVIOR EXPECTED ON THURSDAY FROM THE JAMES VALLEY
THROUGH EXTREME SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA AND NORTHEAST NEBRASKA...

.DISCUSSION...
STRONG SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST WINDS FROM 20 TO 35 MPH...WITH GUSTS TO
AROUND 45 MPH...WILL CONTINUE INTO THE EARLY EVENING FROM AROUND
INTERSTATE 29 EASTWARD BEFORE DIMINISHING AROUND SUNSET. WINDS
WILL DECREASE THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH THE JAMES VALLEY...AND SHIFT
TO NORTHWEST BEHIND A BOUNDARY MOVING SLOWLY INTO LOWER BRULE
AREAS THIS EVENING. A VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER WILL CONTINUE INTO
EARLY EVENING.

CRITICAL FIRE BEHAVIOR IS LIKELY TO DEVELOP ON THURSDAY WITH A
DRYING AIR MASS AND STRONG DAYTIME MIXING. BY NOON...HUMIDITY WILL
DROP TO 20 TO 30 PERCENT WEST OF INTERSTATE 29. A FURTHER DROP IN
HUMIDITY WILL OCCUR THROUGH THE AFTERNOON...WITH 15 TO 20 PERCENT
LIKELY. THIS WILL COMBINE WITH GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS FROM
20 TO 35 MPH BY MIDDAY TO PRODUCE CRITICAL FIRE CONDITIONS FROM
THE LOWER BRULE AND JAMES VALLEY AREAS INTO THE LOWER BIG SIOUX
VALLEY AND NORTHEAST NEBRASKA ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

THE POTENTIAL FOR MORE SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL TONIGHT ACROSS MUCH OF
NORTHWEST IOWA INTO SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA SHOULD KEEP FIRE DANGER TO
THE HIGH TO VERY HIGH CATEGORY ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

CONSIDER POSTPONING BURNING DUE TO THE VERY HIGH OR EXTREME FIRE
DANGER.
