...MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND ILLINOIS RIVER ICE STATEMENT...

                ICE COVER CONDITIONS AS OF 03/03/15

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

IT WAS COLD IN THE PAST WEEK WITH BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THE
ICE GOT A LITTLE THICKER IN MANY PLACES AND SHOWED LITTLE CHANGE IN
OTHERS. ICE JAMS WERE STILL COMMON IN MANY OF THE TRIBUTARIES TO THE
MISSISSIPPI RIVER.

ICE WAS REPORTED FROM ST ANTHONY FALLS MN UPPER LOCK TO LOCK AND DAM
27 (CHAIN OF ROCKS) WITH COVERAGES RANGING FROM 40 TO 100 PERCENT
AND THICKNESSES OF 2 TO 24 INCHES.  THE HEAVIEST ICE WAS FROM LD1
TO LD11 WITH 6O TO 100 PERCENT COVERAGE AND THICKNESSES OF 6 TO 24
INCHES.  ICE COVERAGE WAS MORE VARIABLE FROM LD12 TO LD26 WITH
THICKNESSES OF 2 TO 13 INCHES AND COVERAGES RANGING FROM 40 TO
100 PERCENT.  LD27 REPORTED 10 PERCENT COVERAGE AND AN INCH OF
THICKNESS.

WATER TEMPERATURES WERE 31 TO 33 DEGREES EVERYWHERE EXCEPT FOR
37 AT LD3...34 DEGREES AT LD15...35 DEGREES AT L24...AND 37 DEGREES
AT MEL PRICE.

THE ICE MEASUREMENTS AT LAKE PEPIN (LD3 TO LD4) TAKEN ON FEB 25
SHOWED ICE THICKNESSES OF 16 TO 24 INCHES FROM MILE 765 TO 780
AND 8 TO 14 INCHES FROM MILE 781 TO 782. THIS ICE WILL BE THICKER
WHEN MORE MEASUREMEMTS ARE TAKEN TOMORROW...MARCH 4.

ILLINOIS RIVER SYSTEM (CHICAGO/ILLINOIS R)

ICE COVERAGE WAS 100 PERCENT AT THOMAS J OBRIEN LOCK WITH ICE 5
INCHES THICK. MARSEILLES LD WAS 50 PERCENT ICE COVERED WITH ICE 4
INCHES THICK.  DRESDEN ISLAND REPORTED 90 PRECENT ICE COVERAGE WITH
ICE 4 INCHES THICK. NO ICE WAS REPORTED AT LOCKPORT...BRANDON ROAD
...STARVED ROCK...PEORIA...OR LA GRANGE.

WATER TEMPERATURES WERE 32 TO 36 DEGREES EXCEPT FOR 46 DEGREES
AT LOCKPORT LOCK AND 43 DEGREES AT BRANDON ROAD.

REPORTS INDICATE THAT ICE WAS STABLE OR WAS CONTINUING TO DEVELOP
AND THICKEN ON THE RIVERS IN ILLINOIS WITH COVERAGES RANGING FROM
60 TO 100 PERCENT. THESE RIVERS INCLUDED...DU PAGE...FOX...
IROQUOIS...KANKAKEE...AND THE ROCK. THE DATA SOURCE FOR THESE
REPORTS WAS AT WWW.WEATHER.GOV/LOT UNDER RIVERS AND LAKES.

CURRENT CONDITIONS AS OF 03/03/15:

OUTLOOK FOR NEXT 7 DAYS:

AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL SWEEP ACROSS THE MIDWEST TODAY AND USHER
IN VERY COLD AIR FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK.  THE ARCTIC HIGH
WILL MOVE ACROSS THE MIDWEST WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AND SHOULD BE
TO OUR SOUTHEAST ON FRIDAY. WINDS WILL SHIFT FROM NORTHERLY TO
SOUTHERLY ON FRIDAY AND START A WARMING TREND FROM THIS WEEKEND
THROUGH NEXT WEEK.

IN GENERAL...AIR TEMPERATURES WILL BE 5 TO 15 DEGREES BELOW
NORMAL THIS WEEK AND ABOVE NORMAL THIS WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEK. IN
THE NORTH...LOWS WILL BE BELOW ZERO TONIGHT AND TOMORROW...IN THE
SINGLE DIGITS ON THURSDAY NIGHT...AND IN THE TEENS AND 20S ON
FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY. HIGHS WILL WARM INTO THE 30S ON FRIDAY
THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK. IN THE SOUTH...LOWS WILL BE IN THE TEENS
TONIGHT...SINGLE DIGITS WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY...AND 20S ON FRIDAY
THROUGH MONDAY. HIGHS WILL BE IN THE 40S TODAY...TEENS AND 20S ON
WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY...AND 30S AND 40S ON FRIDAY THROUGH EARLY
NEXT WEEK.

STREAMFLOWS ARE NEAR NORMAL NOW.

MOSTLY LIGHT PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED OVER THE MIDWEST FOR THE NEXT
7 DAYS...WITH HEAVY PRECIP EXPECTED FROM ARKANSAS TO PENNSYLVANIA...
MOSTLY SOUTH OF THE OHIO RIVER.

IN OUR REGION...LOW TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING WERE 20 DEGREES IN
ST CLOUD MN...21 IN THE TWIN CITIES...25 AT LA CROSSE...26 AT ROCK
ISLAND...28 DEGREES AT LD20...27 DEGREES AT PEORIA...AND 31 DEGREES
AT ST LOUIS.

BASED ON THESE FACTORS...ICE WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP AND THICKEN
THIS WEEK...THOUGH STRONG WINDS COULD BREAK IT UP A BIT IN SOME
LOCATIONS. LITTLE CHANGE IN ICE IS EXPECTED IN THE NORTH THIS WEEKEND
AND EARLY NEXT WEEK WHILE ICE SHOULD START BREAKING UP AND MELTING
IN THE SOUTH ON FRIDAY THROUGH NEXT WEEK.

THE THREAT OF ICE JAMS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH NEXT WEEK.

THE NEXT ICE STATEMENT WILL BE RELEASED ON TUESDAY..MAR 10 2015.
