Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
118 PM PDT Thu Apr 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A weak disturbance bringing considerable high
clouds over our region Thursday. Otherwise, dry conditions and
temperatures climbing well above normal will continue through the
weekend and early next week under a ridge of high pressure. A trough
will move inland Tuesday and Wednesday resulting in gusty southwest
winds and temperatures gradually pulling back to near normal.
&&

.SHORT TERM...through Friday.

Fair weather will continue as we approach the weekend although a
weak trough in the Eastern Pacific embedded in considerable high
level moisture will slowly make its way over far Southern California
and Arizona Friday through Friday night. This will lead to periods
of dense high clouds spreading up across our region from southern
California Thursday which may hold temperatures down a couple
degrees from those observed this afternoon, but highs will be in the
mid to upper 80s across the desert zones. Clouds will clear over the
Mojave Desert zones Friday but a band of mid and high clouds will
set up over the southern Sierra and central Nevada. High
temperatures will only vary a degree or two and remain around 10
degrees above normal. Afternoon breezes of 10 to 15 mph will develop
with the western Mojave Desert and central Mohave County zones
experiencing gusts around 25 mph.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through Wednesday.

A ridge will build over the Desert Southwest Saturday and Sunday
then linger through Monday followed by a broad trough moving inland
Tuesday and Wednesday. This will result in temperatures climbing
well above normal with highs likely 90 degrees or above in Las Vegas
Saturday through Monday...and reaching triple digits in Death
Valley. Temperatures will slowly pull back 4-5 degrees each day
Tuesday and Wednesday accompanied by widespread afternoon southwest
winds gusting 20-30 mph due to the influence of the incoming trough.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Southwest winds are expected to
increase this afternoon between 22z-23z with speeds between 10-20
knots. These southwest gusty winds will remain in place through 03z
before diminishing to around 8-10 knots through the overnight
period. Around 12z Thursday, look for winds to become more northwest
around 6 knots and gradually shifting to the northeast around 7
knots after 15z. Increasing mid and high level clouds overnight and
Thursday.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...South to southwest winds will develop this afternoon
over most areas with speeds of 10-20 knots. The exception will be
KBIH where northwest winds are forecast to increase to around 10-20
knots after 22z this afternoon. Winds will then diminish across the
region after sunset with all locations seeing winds less than 10
knots. Increasing mid and high level clouds through Thursday.
