JANUARY BEGAN IN THE MIDST OF AN INTENSE COLD WAVE THAT HAD BEGUN ON
CHRISTMAS DAY AND INTENSIFIED INTO THE NEW YEAR. THE LOW TEMPERATURE
ON JANUARY 1 WAS 17 BELOW ZERO, THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE OBSERVED IN
PORTLAND SINCE JANUARY 27, 1994 (-18). FINALLY, AFTER A RECORD 7
STRAIGHT DAYS THAT THE TEMPERATURE DID NOT WARM ABOVE 15 DEGREES,
PORTLAND SAW A BRIEF WARM UP AS THE TEMPERATURE WARMED ALL THE WAY
TO 30 DEGREES ON JANUARY 4. ALTHOUGH IT WAS WARMER THAN IT HAD BEEN,
THE WARM UP CAME ALONG WITH SOME HEAVY SNOWFALL AS AN INTENSE WINTER
STORM BROUGHT 12 INCHES OF SNOWFALL AND 52 MPH WINDS LEADING TO
BLIZZARD CONDITIONS. ANOTHER SURGE OF VERY COLD ARCTIC AIR MOVED IN
BEHIND THIS STORM WITH PORTLAND SEEING ANOTHER 3 DAYS OF
TEMPERATURES FALLING TO ZERO OR COLDER. JUST WHEN IT SEEMED THIS
INTENSE WINTER COLD WAS BECOMING THE NEW NORMAL, THE JANUARY THAW
ARRIVED. THE TEMPERATURE WARMED INTO THE UPPER 40S TO NEAR 50
DEGREES FOR THREE STRAIGHT DAYS FROM JANUARY 11 THRU 13 ALONG WITH
MORE THAN AN INCH OF RAINFALL. THIS WASHED AWAY MOST OF THE DEEP
EARLY SEASON SNOW COVER. A STRONG COLD FRONT MOVED THROUGH ON
JANUARY 13 BRINGING ANOTHER PERIOD OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES, BUT
NOT NEARLY AS COLD AS THE COLD SPELL A FEW WEEKS EARLIER. MORE SNOW
FELL IN MID JANUARY HELPING TO RESTORE THE WINTER SNOW PACK, BUT THE
BRUTAL COLD FROM EARLIER IN THE WINTER MANAGED TO STAY AWAY FOR THE
REST OF THE MONTH. ANOTHER WARM UP BROUGHT TEMPERATURES IN THE 40S
ON JANUARY 20 AND 21. THE NEXT STORM SYSTEM BROUGHT LIGHT SNOW
FOLLOWED BY FREEZING RAIN ON THE 22ND AND 23RD. WARMER WEATHER
RETURNED AGAIN ON THE 27TH BUT ONLY LASTED A FEW DAYS BEFORE SOME
COLDER WEATHER MOVED IN AGAIN FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS OF THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JANUARY WAS 21.9 DEGREES WHICH WAS 0.4
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL AND THE FIRST BELOW NORMAL JANUARY SINCE 2015.
THE COLDEST JANUARY WAS IN 1971 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS
12.1 DEGREES. THE WARMEST WAS IN 2002 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
WAS 30.4 DEGREES. THE REALLY COLD WEATHER TO START THE YEAR SET A
NEW RECORD FOR THE MOST CONSECUTIVE DAYS THAT THE TEMPERATURE DID
NOT WARM ABOVE 15 DEGREES AS THE FOLLOWING TABLE SHOWS.

MOST CONSECUTIVE DAYS MAX OF 15 DEGREES OR COLDER (SINCE 1940)...

A TOTAL OF 3.29 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 0.09 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION FELL ON JANUARY 12 AND 13
WHEN 1.31 INCHES FELL. THE DRIEST JANUARY ON RECORD WAS IN 2004 WHEN
ONLY 0.28 INCHES WAS RECORDED. THE WETTEST WAS IN 1935 WHEN 12.29
INCHES WAS MEASURED.

THERE WAS A TOTAL OF 18.8 INCHES OF SNOWFALL WHICH WAS 0.4 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST SNOW FELL DURING THE BLIZZARD OF JANUARY
4 AND 5 WHEN 12.0 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE LEAST SNOW TO FALL IN
JANUARY WAS IN 1908 WHEN ONLY 1.6 INCHES FELL. THE SNOWIEST JANUARY
WAS IN 1979 WHEN 62.4 INCHES FELL.
