                ICE COVER CONDITIONS AS OF 1/10/2017

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

ICE DEVELOPED AND GREW IN THE PAST WEEK WITH TEMPERATURES TEN TO TWENTY
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL IN THE NORTH AND 5 TO 10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL IN THE
SOUTH.  THE BITTER COLD COMBINED WITH NEAR FREEZING WATER, AND HIGH
STREAMFLOWS, MADE FOR RAPID ICE FORMATION AND GROWTH IN MANY AREAS.

LOCK AND DAM REPORTS FROM JANUARY 7 SHOWED 80 TO 100 PERCENT ICE
COVERAGE FROM THE TWIN CITIES TO LOCK AND DAM 13 WITH THICKNESSES OF 2
TO 14 INCHES. REPORTS FROM LD14 THRU LD27 SHOWED 20 TO 100 PERCENT
COVERAGE WITH THICKNESSES OF 2 TO 6 INCHES.

VIIRS SATELLITE IMAGERY FROM JANUARY 7 INDICATED 80 TO 100 PERCENT
ICE COVERAGE FROM THE TWIN CITIES TO WINONA, APPROXIMATELY 40 TO 50
PERCENT COVERAGE FROM WINONA TO LD9, 10 TO 30 PERCENT COVERAGE FROM LD9
TO LD13, 0 TO TEN PERCENT COVERAGE FROM LD13 TO LD17, AND 50 TO 100
PERCENT COVERAGE FROM BURLINGTON, IOWA TO LD19.  HEAVY ICE CONCENTRATIONS
WERE INDICATED AROUND LD19, LD24, AND UPSTREAM OF ALTON/LD26.  THE
IMAGERY CAN BE FOUND AT

WATER TEMPERATURES WERE 31 TO 36 DEGREES.

ILLINOIS RIVER SYSTEM (CHICAGO/ILLINOIS R)

THOMAS J O`BRIEN LOCK REPORTED 100 PERCENT ICE COVERAGE ON JANUARY 7
WITH ICE 4 INCHES THICK.  STARVED ROCK LD REPORTED 100 PERCENT COVERAGE
WITH ICE 3 INCHES THICK.  PEORIA LD REPORTED 90 PERCENT COVERAGE WITH
ICE 3 INCHES THICK.  THE TRIBUTATIES TO THE ILLINOIS WERE GENERALLY 90
TO 100 PERCENT ICE COVERED WITH ICE JAMS IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS.

VIIRS SATELLITE IMAGERY FROM JANUARY 7 SHOWED MOSTLY OPEN WATER FROM
CHICAGO TO HIGHWAY 180/71, AND 50 TO 100 PERCENT ICE COVERAGE FROM AROUND
HENRY TO THE CONFLUENCE WITH THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.  THE HEAVIEST
CONCENTRATION OF ICE WAS FROM PEORIA TO MEREDOSIA.

WATER TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE 30S EXCEPT FOR 47 DEGREES AT LOCKPORT
LOCK AND 41 DEGREES AT BRANDON ROAD. .

ICE FACTORS AS OF 1/10/2017:

OUTLOOK FOR NEXT 7 DAYS:

NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES THIS WEEK WILL WARM TO ABOVE NORMAL NEXT WEEK.

IN THE NORTH...HIGHS WILL BE IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AND TEENS THROUGH
SATURDAY AND IN THE 20S ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY.  LOWS WILL RANGE FROM
5 ABOVE TO 15 BELOW AND SHOULD BE A LITTLE WARMER ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY.

IN THE SOUTH...HIGHS WILL BE IN THE 50S AND 60S TODAY AND 30S TO 50S
TOMORROW THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK. LOWS WILL BE IN THE TEENS AND 20S AND
WARMER ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY.

IN OUR REGION...LOW TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING WERE 21 DEGREES AT
ST CLOUD, 23 DEGREES IN THE TWIN CITIES, 28 DEGREES IN THE QUAD
CITIES, 32 DEGREES AT PEORIA, AND 40 DEGREES AT ST LOUIS.

BASED ON THESE FACTORS...CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR CONTINUED
ICE FORMATION AND GROWTH IN THE NORTH. THE SOUTH COULD SEE SOME NEW
ICE ON THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY NIGHT. OTHERWISE, CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE IN THE SOUTH FOR SOME ICE DECAY AND BREAK-UP. ICE JAMMING
WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH NEXT WEEK ESPECIALLY WHERE THERE ARE
OBSTRUCTIONS IN THE RIVER OR DECREASES IN SLOPE.

THE NEXT RIVER ICE STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED ON TUESDAY
JANUARY 17, 2017.
