301 FNUS55 KABQ 070949 FWFABQ Fire Weather Planning Forecast for North and Central New Mexico National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 349 AM MDT Tue May 7 2024 ...RED FLAG WARNING TODAY FROM 10 AM UNTIL 9 PM AREAWIDE BELOW SNOWPACK DUE TO STRONG WINDS, VERY LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND AN UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE... ...FIRE WEATHER WATCH WEDNESDAY FROM 11 AM UNTIL 8 PM ALONG AND EAST OF THE CENTRAL MOUNTAIN CHAIN BELOW SNOWPACK DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND VERY LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY... .DISCUSSION... Strong to severe winds are forecast to redevelop today across all of northern and central New Mexico while very dry conditions persist. Temperatures will warm up and this will only cause conditions to turn more unstable with Red Flag conditions areawide. The strongest winds will be found over the Sangre de Cristos and surrounding highlands where gusts may reach 55 to 65 mph today. Conditions will turn slightly cooler with slightly less wind on Wednesday, but it will still be breezy to windy with elevated to critical conditions expected over central to eastern New Mexico where a Fire Weather Watch is in effect. A cold front will back into New Mexico from the east on Thursday, and the cooler, more humid air will finally break the recent curse of prolonged critical fire weather. While there will be some gusty conditions that accompany the front, they will be of a much shorter duration, and overall winds will be much less than they have been. This cooler and less windy pattern looks to persist Thursday through the weekend with a chance for showers and thunderstorms also expected.
