...DANGEROUS HEAT AND HUMIDITY EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF CENTRAL AND
EASTERN MISSOURI AS WELL AS SOUTHWEST ILLINOIS...

.HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL BUILD ACROSS THE AREA THE REMAINDER OF
THE WEEK AND INTO THE UPCOMING WEEKEND. THIS SUMMER HAS BEEN
RELATIVELY COOL...SO THESE HIGH LEVELS OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL
FEEL OPPRESSIVE. THE LENGTH OF THIS HEAT WAVE WILL MAKE IT
ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS FOR THOSE THAT DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO AIR
CONDITIONING. ALTHOUGH THE ENTIRE AREA WILL EXPERIENCE THESE HOT
AND HUMID CONDITIONS...THE GREATEST IMPACT WILL BE FELT IN THE
URBAN HEAT ISLAND OF THE ST LOUIS METRO AREA.

  WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON...AND WILL CONTINUE FOR THE REST OF THE
  WEEK AND INTO THE UPCOMING WEEKEND.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES...UP TO 107 DUE TO TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 90S...AND
  DEWPOINTS IN THE LOWER 70S.

* IMPACTS...THE LIKELY COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH
  HUMIDITY WILL LEAD TO AN INCREASED RISK OF HEAT-RELATED STRESS
  AND ILLNESS. THE VERY YOUNG...THE ELDERLY...THOSE WITHOUT AIR
  CONDITIONING...AND THOSE PARTICIPATING IN STRENUOUS OUTDOOR
  ACTIVITIES WILL BE THE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE. ALSO...CAR INTERIORS
  WILL REACH LETHAL TEMPERATURES IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. BEAT THE

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO THE EARLY MORNING
OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND
HEAT STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
