From: William H. Burnett, PhD
Acting Director, NWS Office of Observations

Subject: Station Changes in GOES-R ASOS Satellite Cloud Products,
   Effective June 2, 2024

Beginning June 2, 2024, 149 station locations and identifiers will no
longer appear in the GOES-R Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS)
Satellite Cloud Products (ASOS SCPs).

The ASOS SCPs supplement surface weather observations with hourly
cloud-
cover estimates inferred from observations by the GOES-East or
GOES-West
Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). Additional details on ASOS SCPs
(including
the 149 stations to be removed on June 2, 2024) may be found at
https://vlab.noaa.gov/web/towr-s/asos-scp.

This change will remove obsolete station identifiers and stations
that are
no longer in service. After the change, ASOS SCPs will report cloud
cover
estimates for 3,118 station locations (instead of 3,267).

These changes build on prior efforts to harmonize ASOS SCPs with the
AWIPS
National Datasets Maintenance (NDM) list of Meteorological Aerodrome
Report (METAR) stations. (SCN23-92)

Members of the NOAA community may request changes to the list of
stations
used for ASOS SCPs via the AWIPS NDM repository at
https://vlab.noaa.gov/redmine/projects/awips-ndm/issues.

Henceforth, the station list used for ASOS SCPs will be refreshed
periodically from the AWIPS NDM repository, with no public notice.

Critical weather or other factors may affect the timing of
these changes.
