THE MONTH OF DECEMBER FOR ANNETTE ISLAND, AK WAS A WARMER AND SEMI-WETTER ONE THAN
USUAL ALONG WITH HAVING VIRTUALLY NO FROZEN PRECIPITATION, WHICH IS A LITTLE
UNUSUAL. HOWEVER, IF YOU LOOK AT THE HISTORICAL CLIMATIC RANGE OF APPROXIMATELY
ONCE EVERY 10 YEARS FOR FROZEN PRECIPITATION, THIS WOULD BE TYPICAL HERE. ON THE
SUNNY SIDE, THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 55 DEGREES F(FAHRENHEIT), WHICH WAS 5
DEGREES F HIGHER THAN THE AVERAGE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE, HISTORICALLY. THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE WAS 42.1 DEGREES F, A LOT HIGHER THAN THE ESTABLISHED 37.1 DEGREES F
AVERAGE AND ALMOST SET THE RECORD, BUT WAS JUST SHY OF THE 43.0 DEGREES F MARK SET
BACK IN 1989. ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM, THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 25
DEGREES F. THIS WAS 7 DEGREES F WARMER THAN THE HISTORICAL AVERAGE FOR THE MONTH
AND A LOT FURTHER FROM THE RECORD LOW OF 1 DEGREE F SET IN 1964. TWENTY SIX VERY
LIGHT TO HEAVY RAINY DAYS HAD US WITH A TOTAL PRECIPITATION OF 12.96 INCHES, A
LITTLE HIGHER THAN THE USUAL 10.72, BUT EXTREMELY FAR FROM THE RECORD HIGH AND LOW
OF 28.90 AND 3.41, RESPECTIVELY. WE UNFORTUNATELY DID NOT HAVE A WHITE CHRISTMAS
THIS YEAR, PARTLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE ONLY HAD 0.4 INCHES OF SNOWFALL THE WHOLE
MONTH, BUT ON THE BRIGHTER SIDE WE DID ALMOST TIE THE RECORD LOW OF 0.00 INCHES OF
TOTAL SNOWFALL SET IN 1989. OBVIOUSLY, THE SAME GOES FOR THE AMOUNT OF SNOW DEPTH
AS WELL WITH HAVING THE ONLY MEASURABLE AMOUNT OF AN INCH LEFTOVER FROM THE MONTH
BEFORE. LASTLY, WIND SPEED AVERAGED AT 8.6MPH WHILE AVERAGE PEAK WINDS FOR THE
MONTH WERE 23.3MPH WHICH WAS RIGHT ON THE MONEY WITH THE HISTORICAL AVERAGE OF
23.3MPH ALONG WITH HAVING A HIGHEST PEAK WIND RECORDED AT 63MPH, 15TH ON THE ALL-
TIME HIGH LIST.
