...DECEMBER 2014 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

ALTHOUGH THE MONTH AS A WHOLE AVERAGED SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL IN THE
TEMPERATURE DEPARTMENT AND SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL IN
PRECIPITATION/SNOWFALL...THE TWO MOST MEMORABLE ASPECTS OF THE MONTH
WERE:

1) AN UNUSUALLY LONG-STRETCH OF CLOUDY "WINTER GLOOM" THAT HUNG OVER
THE AREA FOR ESSENTIALLY TWO STRAIGHT WEEKS DURING THE MIDDLE PART
OF THE MONTH. IN FACT...HASTINGS SAW VERY LITTLE (IF ANY) SUNSHINE
FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE WEEKS BETWEEN THE 10TH AND 23RD...BEFORE THE SUN
MADE A TRIUMPHANT RETURN JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS EVE-CHRISTMAS
DAY.

2) THROUGH THE FIRST 26 DAYS OF THE MONTH...DECEMBER WAS ON PACE TO
BE ONE OF THE TOP-15 WARMEST ON RECORD WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
THAT WAS 5.9 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. HOWEVER...A NOTICEABLY COLDER
AIRMASS SETTLED INTO THE AREA DURING THE FINAL 5 DAYS AND ESPECIALLY
THE LAST TWO DAYS...THUS KNOCKING THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
DOWN SEVERAL DEGREES FROM ITS INITIAL PACE.

FOCUSING ON TEMPERATURES IN MORE DETAIL...THE OVERALL AVERAGE
MONTHLY TEMPERATURE (RESULTING FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS AND
LOWS) WAS 30.1 DEGREES...WHICH WAS 2.5 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. AS
MENTIONED IN THE PRECEDING PARAGRAPH...THE MAJORITY OF THE MONTH WAS
SEASONABLY MILD...AS 20 OF THE FIRST 26 DAYS CARRIED AN ABOVE NORMAL
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE...INCLUDING 15 DAYS WITH A HIGH OF AT LEAST 40
DEGREES. HOWEVER...NOTICEABLY COLDER AIR ARRIVED DURING THE FINAL 5
DAYS...PEAKING IN INTENSITY ON THE 30TH-31ST AS LOW TEMPERATURES
BOTTOMED OUT AT -3 AND -5 DEGREES...RESPECTIVELY. FURTHERMORE..THE
HIGH OF ONLY 5 DEGREES ON THE 30TH MARKED THE COLDEST HIGH
TEMPERATURE FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR OF 2014. DURING THE MILD MAJORITY OF
THE MONTH...THE OVERALL-WARMEST WEEK WAS CENTERED BETWEEN THE 8TH-
14TH DURING WHICH FOUR OF THE SEVEN DAYS REACHED AT LEAST 51
DEGREES...INCLUDING THE WARMEST MONTHLY HIGH OF 57 ON THE 14TH.
HOWEVER...MILD LOW TEMPERATURES STOLE THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE 13TH AND
14TH...AS NOT ONLY DID BOTH DAYS SET NEW RECORD WARM LOWS FOR THE
DATE...BUT THE LOW OF ONLY 47 DEGREES ON THE 13TH TIED THE RECORD-
WARMEST LOW FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF DECEMBER! THIS VALUE TIED THE
PREVIOUS MARK OF 47 DEGREES WHICH WAS INITIALLY SET ON DEC. 10, 1939
AND THEN MATCHED ON DEC. 2, 1962. THE MOST EXTREME DAY-TO-DAY CHANGE
IN HIGH TEMPERATURES DURING THE MONTH WAS 26 DEGREES AND OCCURRED
EARLY-ON...CONSISTING OF A SHARP WARM-UP FROM 25 DEGREES ON THE 1ST
TO 51 ON THE 2ND.

TURNING TO DECEMBER 2014 PRECIPITATION...THE TOTAL OF 0.54 INCHES AT
HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS 0.07 INCHES BELOW THE 30-YEAR NORMAL
OF 0.61 INCHES. OVER HALF OF THIS PRECIPITATION (0.30 INCHES) FELL
IN THE FORM OF RAIN DURING THE PRE-DAWN HOURS OF THE 15TH. THEN
DURING THE LATTER HALF OF THE MONTH...HASTINGS RECEIVED FOUR FAIRLY
"MINOR" ROUNDS OF ACCUMULATING SNOW...THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OF WHICH
WAS 1.5 INCHES THAT FELL ON THE EVENING OF THE 26TH AND WAS PRECEDED
BY A PERIOD OF FREEZING DRIZZLE. TOTAL SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH ENDED
UP AT JUST 3.4 INCHES...WHICH WAS 2.7 INCHES BELOW THE 30-YEAR
NORMAL.

A BRIEF PERIOD OF RARE...ALBEIT-WEAK DECEMBER THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY
AFFECTED THE HASTINGS AREA ON THE NIGHT OF THE 14TH. WIND-WISE...IT
WAS NOT AN OVERLY-WINDY DECEMBER AS ONLY THREE DAYS FEATURED PEAK
NORTH-NORTHWESTERLY GUSTS OF 40+ MPH...LED BY A 51 MPH GUST ON THE
EVENING OF THE 15TH.
