A PERSISTENT AREA OF LOW PRESSURE DOMINATED THE WEATHER PATTERN IN
NEW ENGLAND THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF MAY. THIS BROUGHT MOSTLY
COOL TEMPERATURES AND FREQUENT AFTERNOON SHOWERS ALONG WITH
OCCASIONAL PERIODS OF STEADIER RAINFALL. THE FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH
ONLY SAW THE TEMPERATURE REACH 44 DEGREES, THE COLDEST MAY DAY SINCE
1975. RAIN WAS OBSERVED ON 13 OF THE FIRST 15 DAYS OF THE MONTH AT
PORTLAND. THE LAST FREEZE OF THE SEASON OCCURRED ON MAY 9, ABOUT A
WEEK LATER THAN NORMAL. THE PESKY LOW PRESSURE AREA FINALLY MOVED
OUT OF THE REGION ON THE 16TH, WITH A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE BUILDING
IN BEHIND IT. THIS BROUGHT A PERIOD OF MUCH WARMER WEATHER, INCLUDING
THE FIRST 90 DEGREE DAY OF THE SEASON ON THE 18TH. THIS MINI-HEAT
WAVE
WAS BROUGHT TO AN END WHEN A COLD FRONT DROPPED DOWN FROM CANADA ON
THE
19TH, BRINGING COOLER WEATHER FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. A NOR`EASTER
MOVED UP THE COAST ON THE NIGHT OF THE 25TH, BRINGING 2.77 INCHES OF
RAIN TO THE CITY IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD. THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND CLEARED
OUT WITH WARM SUNNY DAYS BEFORE COLD, CLOUDY MEMORIAL DAY ON THE
29TH WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE ONLY REACHING 49 DEGREES.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 52.9 DEGREES WHICH WAS 1.0
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE WARMEST MAY ON RECORD WAS IN 2015 WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 59.5 DEGREES. THE COLDEST WAS IN 1967 WHEN IT
WAS ONLY 47.2 DEGREES.

A TOTAL OF 5.94 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL, WHICH WAS 1.93 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION WAS ON THE 26TH WHEN 1.74
INCHES FELL. THE WETTEST MAY ON RECORD WAS IN 2006 WHEN 12.34 INCHES
WAS MEASURED. THE DRIEST WAS IN 1965 WHEN ONLY 0.49 INCHES FELL.

NO SNOW FELL DURING THE MONTH. SNOWFALL IN MAY IS QUITE RARE, WITH
MEASURABLE SNOW ONLY BEING OBSERVED IN 3 TIMES IN THE 136-YEAR
HISTORY OF SNOWFALL OBSERVATIONS AT PORTLAND. THE MOST SNOWFALL WAS
IN 1945 WHEN 7.0 INCHES FELL. THE MOST RECENT MEASURABLE SNOWFALL
WAS IN 1967. THERE HAVE BEEN AN ADDITIONAL 20 YEARS WITH A TRACE OF
SNOWFALL OR HAIL BEING OBSERVED, MOST RECENTLY IN 2014.
