FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
237 PM PDT THU AUG 25 2016

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM PDT THIS EVENING...
...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 9 PM PDT FRIDAY...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...THERMAL TROUGH OVER THE VALLEY TODAY WITH
HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS. DRY AND BREEZY OFFSHORE TODAY THEN
DECREASING FRIDAY. UNSTABLE CONDITIONS AGAIN FRIDAY THEN
MOIST ONSHORE FLOW RETURNS LATE FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY.

.DISCUSSION...AN UPPER RIDGE WILL EXTEND OVER THE PACIFIC
NORTHWEST THROUGH FRIDAY...PLACING THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY UNDER THE
PRIME AREA OF SUBSIDENCE AND SURFACE HEATING. A THERMAL TROUGH
OVER THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON WILL DRIFT BACK TO THE
COAST TONIGHT. AS THAT HAPPENS...WINDS NEAR THE COAST WHICH HAVE
TURNED ONSHORE THIS AFTERNOON WILL AGAIN TURN OFFSHORE...MAKING
FOR POOR HUMIDITY RECOVERY AT ELEVATION NEAR THE COAST. THE CENTRAL
COAST RANGE AND LANE COUNTY CASCADE FOOTHILLS WILL ALSO SEE POOR
HUMIDITY RECOVERY TONIGHT. HOWEVER WINDS SHOULD DECREASE SOME
SO DO NOT THINK THOSE AREAS WILL QUITE MEET LOCAL NIGHTTIME RED
FLAG CRITERIA (35% OR LESS RH AND 15 MPH OR GREATER SUSTAINED
WINDS FOR AT LEAST 3 HOURS).

FRIDAY WILL BE ANOTHER VERY DRY AND UNSTABLE DAY WITH THE THERMAL
TROUGH RETURNING TO OVER THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY BUT WINDS WILL BE
LIGHTER AS THE THERMAL TROUGH WEAKENS SOME. WINDS WILL BEGIN TO
TURN ONSHORE FRIDAY AFTERNOON...BUT MOIST MARINE AIR WILL NOT
TRULY RETURN TO THE LOCAL AREA UNTIL SATURDAY WHEN ONSHORE FLOW
FULLY ESTABLISHES ITSELF. HOWEVER IT SHOULD AID HUMIDITY RECOVERY
FRIDAY NIGHT. MOIST ONSHORE FLOW REMAINS THROUGH THE REST OF THE
FORECAST PERIOD.

***WINDS ARE 20 FOOT 10 MINUTE AVERAGES***
