NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILMINGTON NC

...THIS WEEK IS NATIONAL HURRICANE AWARENESS WEEK...

IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO PREPARE FOR THE 2015 HURRICANE SEASON. THE
ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS EACH YEAR ON JUNE 1ST AND ENDS
NOVEMBER 30TH. BEING PREPARED CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN YOUR
ABILITY TO COPE WHEN A STORM THREATENS.

THIS IS THE NATIONAL DAY OF FAMILY PREPAREDNESS. IT IS TIME TO
DEVELOP A FAMILY PREPAREDNESS PLAN. CONTACT THE LOCAL RED
CROSS...STATE OR COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY...OR THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TO FIND OUT HOW TO DEVELOP A PLAN.

BEFORE HURRICANE SEASON STARTS YOU SHOULD HAVE A DISASTER SUPPLY
KIT. MANY OF THE ITEMS IN THE KIT ARE ALREADY SCATTERED AROUND YOUR
HOME AND JUST NEED TO BE BROUGHT TOGETHER.

DISCUSS THE POTENTIAL HAZARDS WITH YOUR FAMILY. MAKE SURE CHILDREN
UNDERSTAND WHAT A HURRICANE IS AND WHAT THEY CAN EXPECT. LET THEM
KNOW THAT HURRICANES CAN BE DANGEROUS IF PROPER PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT
TAKEN. EXPLAIN TO THEM THAT ESTABLISHING A PLAN WILL HELP PREPARE
YOU FOR A HURRICANE.

WHEN A HURRICANE WATCH IS ISSUED CHECK YOUR DISASTER SUPPLY KIT TO
MAKE SURE NOTHING IS MISSING. DETERMINE IF THERE IS ANYTHING YOU
NEED TO SUPPLEMENT YOUR KIT. ACTIVATE YOUR FAMILY DISASTER PLAN BY
TAKING PROTECTIVE MEASURES OUTLINED IN THE PLAN. COVER ALL WINDOWS
AND DOORS AND SECURE ANY LOOSE OUTDOOR ITEMS. HAVE ALL VALUABLE
PAPERS AND PHOTOGRAPHS READY TO BE MOVED ON SHORT NOTICE. MAKE SURE
YOU HAVE AN OPERATING NOAA WEATHER RADIO THAT IS SET UP PROPERLY.

WHEN A HURRICANE WARNING IS ISSUED MAKE SURE YOUR DISASTER SUPPLY
KIT IS READY FOR USE. BE SURE TO TAKE IT WITH YOU IF YOU CHOSE TO
EVACUATE. FINISH COMPLETING STEPS IN YOUR FAMILY DISASTER PLAN AND
DECIDE THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE DURING THE STORM.
