Rangeland Fire Danger Statement

.DISCUSSION...Warm, dry, and breezy weather is expected today
across central to southwest South Dakota ahead of a cold front.
Chances for showers will increase through afternoon across far
western areas. High temperatures on the plains will range from 65
northwest to 88 southeast and the minimum relative humidity will
range from near 45 percent over far northwestern South Dakota to
around 18 percent over southwest and south central South Dakota.
Southwesterly winds of 15 to 25 MPH will veer northwest behind the
advancing cold front.

...Extreme Fire Danger...

The grassland fire danger index will reach the extreme category
this afternoon. Extreme weather conditions or a very low moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground,
indicate that critical burning conditions exist. A fire will
start easily and has the potential to become large and spread
quickly becoming erratic with extreme behavioral characteristics.
No outdoor burning should take place.

this afternoon. Very poor weather conditions or a very low
moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic material on
the ground, indicate that dangerous burning conditions exist.
Fires will spread rapidly and show erratic behavior. Outdoor
burning is not recommended.

The outlook for Wednesday afternoon, The grassland fire danger
index will reach the very high category to extreme category.

afternoon. Unfavorable weather conditions or a low moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground,
indicate that there is a moderate to high potential for a fire
occurrence. Outdoor burning should be restricted to early morning
or evening hours when wind speeds are usually lower and the
relative humidity is higher.
