A smoke plume was moving across portions of Nassau, Charlton, and
Duval counties this afternoon from the West Mims Wildfire in the
Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The Jacksonville
International Airport was reporting 2 mile visibility in smoke at
2 PM this afternoon. Everyone in the smoke plume should limit
prolonged outdoor exertion until the smoke clears. The smoke plume
will move slowly northward by this evening, and may affect
portions of Camden County tonight. Children, pregnant women, the
elderly, and those that have heart or lung disease are especially
vulnerable to smoke exposure. Fine particles are respiratory
irritants, and exposures to high concentrations can cause
persistent cough, phlegm, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.
