Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Juneau AK
231 PM AKDT Mon Apr 22 2024

.SHORT TERM...A low over the southern gulf/north Pacific ocean
will continue to influence the region. Clouds and rain showers
continue to move across the area this afternoon and into this evening
as the low continues to track to the east. Most of the rain that
is expected with this low is expected to be fairly light but some
showers could produce some brief periods of heavier rain. Winds
will this low will increase across the southern panhandle as the
low moves closer to shore but should remain below 30 kt for most
locations across the coastal waters. Winds through the Inner
Channels are expected to remain below 20 kt. As this surface low
tracks inland into BC around the Dixon Entrance area, areas north
of this will likely see more limited showers with terrain blocking
from the Coast Mountains. Although a few showers may be able to
make it over the terrain and wet the ground across the central
panhandle. As the low moves inland, high pressure will start to
build in the lee of this low over the gulf Tuesday night into
Wednesday.

.LONG TERM.../ Wednesday through Saturday morning / Upper level
low exiting gulf moving into British Columbia Wednesday, a minor
ridge moves into the area. The next big frontal band will spread
into the area especially the southern panhandle Saturday and into
Sunday. Mid to long range forecast is that a system will sweep
into the panhandle from the south.

Have gone with a drier forecast into Thursday and into Saturday, so
dried the forecast some, and decreased the clouds some. Break is
only 2 days it looks like rain will be returning to the forecast
over the weekend.

Larger changes at the later period may be limited as model
discrepancies and smaller feature has national center leaning
towards a ensemble solution.

&&

.AVIATION...Broken to overcast skies with VFR and intermittent
MVFR ceilings expected to continue through the TAF period. Highest
precipitation chances confined along the southern Panhandle and
the Outer Coast of the panhandle after 12z Tuesday with MVFR
conditions within heaviest showers. Winds should remain around
5-10kts with strongest sustained winds up to 15kts possible for
southern panhandle TAF sites by 14z.
