PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEWPORT/MOREHEAD CITY NC

...NORTH CAROLINA RIP CURRENT PREPAREDNESS WEEK FOR 2015...

THE WEEK OF JUNE 7TH THROUGH JUNE 13TH HAS BEEN DECLARED RIP CURRENT
PREPAREDNESS WEEK BY THE GOVERNOR OF NORTH CAROLINA. TODAY WE WILL TALK
ABOUT RIP CURRENT SAFETY AND HOW THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
FORECASTS RIP CURRENTS INCLUDING WHAT THE DIFFERENT THREAT LEVELS
MEAN.

FOLLOWING SOME SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WILL HELP MINIMIZE YOUR CHANCES OF
BECOMING A VICTIM OF RIP CURRENTS. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT YOU
KNOW HOW TO SWIM BEFORE HAND, ESPECIALLY HOW TO SWIM IN THE SURF. IT
IS NOT THE SAME AS SWIMMING IN A POOL OR LAKE. WHENEVER POSSIBLE,
SWIM AT A LIFEGUARD PROTECTED BEACH AND NEVER SWIM ALONE. OBEY ALL
INSTRUCTIONS AND ORDERS FROM LIFEGUARDS. LIFEGUARDS ARE TRAINED TO
IDENTIFY POTENTIAL HAZARDS. ASK A LIFEGUARD ABOUT THE CONDITIONS
BEFORE ENTERING THE WATER, IT IS PART OF THEIR JOB. STAY AT LEAST
100 FT AWAY FROM PIERS AND JETTIES, PERMANENT RIP CURRENTS OFTEN
EXIST NEAR THESE STRUCTURES. PAY ESPECIALLY CLOSE ATTENTION TO
CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY WHEN AT THE BEACH. BE CAUTIOUS AT ALL
TIMES, ESPECIALLY AT UNGUARDED BEACHES. IF IN DOUBT, DON`T GO OUT.

IF YOU ARE CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT, REMAIN CALM TO CONSERVE ENERGY
AND THINK CLEARLY. NEVER FIGHT AGAINST THE CURRENT. SWIM OUT OF THE
CURRENT IN A DIRECTION PARALLEL TO THE SHORELINE. WHEN OUT OF THE
CURRENT, SWIM AT AN ANGLE AWAY FROM THE CURRENT AND TOWARD THE
SHORE. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO SWIM OUT OF THE RIP CURRENT, FLOAT OR
CALMLY TREAD WATER. WHEN OUT OF THE CURRENT, SWIM TOWARD SHORE. IF
YOU ARE UNABLE TO REACH SHORE, DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF BY WAVING
YOUR ARMS AND YELLING FOR HELP.

RIP CURRENTS DEVELOP DUE TO NEARSHORE BATHYMETRY AND THE LOCATION
OF SAND BARS. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FORECAST WHERE RIP CURRENTS WILL
FORM AT ANY GIVEN TIME, THOUGH NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECASTERS
CAN ACCURATELY PREDICT SHORT TERM WIND, SWELL AND TIDE CONDITIONS.
RESEARCH HAS HELPED TO IDENTIFY WHAT WIND, SWELL, AND TIDE
CONDITIONS ARE MOST LIKELY TO PRODUCE FREQUENT OR STRONG RIP
CURRENTS. THE SURF ZONE FORECAST INCLUDES RIP CURRENT RISK FORECASTS
FOR LOCAL BEACHES FOR UP TO 24 HOURS, INCLUDING OTHER ELEMENTS SUCH
AS WEATHER, SURF HEIGHT, TIDE, UV INDEX, WIND, AND LIGHTNING RISK.
RIP CURRENT FORECASTS WILL HAVE THE QUALIFIERS LOW, MODERATE OR HIGH
RISK TO INDICATE THE RIP CURRENT RISK. IF A LOW RISK IS FORECAST,
WIND AND WAVE CONDITIONS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT
OF STRONG OR FREQUENT RIP CURRENTS. A MODERATE RISK MEANS STRONGER
OR MORE FREQUENT RIP CURRENTS ARE EXPECTED AND ONLY EXPERIENCED
SWIMMERS SHOULD ENTER THE WATER. A HIGH RISK MEANS THAT DANGEROUS
RIP CURRENTS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP, AND COULD BE LIFE THREATENING
TO ANYONE ENTERING THE SURF. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT UNDER ANY
CONDITIONS RIP CURRENTS CAN OCCUR AND BEACHGOERS SHOULD KNOW HOW TO
SWIM, AND ALSO HEED THE ADVICE OF BEACH PATROL BEFORE ENTERING THE
SURF.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT RIP CURRENTS, PLEASE VISIT
WWW.RIPCURRENTS.NOAA.GOV OR IF YOU ARE AT THE BEACH, ASK AN ON DUTY
LIFEGUARD. TOMORROW WE WILL DISCUSS THE DANGERS OF STRONG SHOREBREAK
AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM GETTING INJURED FROM
BREAKING WAVES.
