RECORD EVENT REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOBILE AL
308 PM CDT WED APR 30 2014

...RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL SET AT PENSACOLA...

A RECORD RAINFALL OF ESTIMATED 15.55 INCHES WAS SET AT PENSACOLA YESTERDAY.
THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 3.06 SET IN 1918.

EXPLANATION FOR ESTIMATE:

THE CALENDAR DAY RAINFALL VALUE FOR APRIL 29, 2014 AT PENSACOLA
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT KPNS HAS BEEN ESTIMATED TO BE 15.55, WHICH IS
A NEW CALENDAR DAY RECORD FOR THE DATE, AND A NEW ALL-TIME CALENDAR
DAY RECORD. THE PREVIOUS RECORD FOR APRIL 29 WAS 3.06 IN 1918. THE
PREVIOUS ALL-TIME CALENDAR DAY RECORD WAS 15.29 ESTABLISHED ON
OCTOBER 5, 1934. RAINFALL DATA AT PENSACOLA EXTENDS BACK TO 1880.

THE AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SYSTEM (ASOS) AT KPNS LOST POWER SHORTLY
AFTER 9:00 PM LST LAST NIGHT, RESULTING IN NEARLY 3 HOURS OF MISSING
RAINFALL DATA. THE DAILY OBSERVED RAINFALL VALUE THROUGH 9:08 PM LST
WAS 11.13. THE ASOS AT NEARBY PENSACOLA NAVAL AIR STATION KNPA
REPORTED HEAVY RAIN THROUGHOUT THE NEARLY 3 HOUR TIME PERIOD FROM
9:00PM LST TO MIDNIGHT LST. UNFORTUNATELY, THE RAIN GAUGE HERE ALSO
MALFUNCTIONED. IT IS CLEAR THAT ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAINS DID ALSO
OCCUR AT THE NWS CLIMATE SITE AT PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

THIS 15.55 ESTIMATE IS BASED MAINLY ON DUAL POLARIZATION RAINFALL DATA FROM
THE NEARBY WSR-88D LOCATED AT EGLIN AFB (KEVX). IT IS CORROBORATED
BY 17.00 PLUS RAINFALL VALUES FROM NEARBY COCORAHS REPORTS. IN
ADDITION, THE SOUTHEAST RIVER FORECAST CENTER QUANTITATIVE
PRECIPITATION ESTIMATE (QPE) VALUES ALSO SUPPORT THIS.

THIS VALUE HAS BEEN COORDINATED WITH THE FLORIDA CLIMATE CENTER.
