...NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 09/20/17 TORNADO EVENT...

.OVERVIEW...Six tornadoes and multiple downbursts hit portions of
west central and central Minnesota in the very early morning hours
on September 20, from 1218 am to 111 am cdt. Five were rated EF-1
and the sixth was rated EF-0. In the six tornadoes, maximum
speeds were about 100, 95, 95, 90, 90, and 75 mph.

Downburst winds accompanied some of the tornadoes, while in other
damage areas, the winds were entirely from downburst. Areas where
downbursts hit included...

1. Douglas County / south of Brandon to Leaf Valley.
2. Kandiyohi County / north and northeast of Lake Lillian.
3. Morrison County / Swanville and north of Swanville.
4. Pope County / areas around and northeast of Johanna Lake.
5. Stearns County / southern and central Belgrade as well as
rural areas around Belgrade, Brooten area, Elrosa area to
Greenwald and Meire Grove, Melrose, east and northeast of St Rosa.
It should be noted that the damage in Melrose was from downburst.
6. Swift County / areas south of Swift Falls.

This was a very complicated damage survey, with damage due to
tornadoes, rear flank downdraft winds, mini bow echoes, and
swirling outflow or shallow non-tornadic vortices. In many cases,
one type of damage was in proximity to other types of damage. A
couple of areas were indeterminate. Staff members combed parts of
Chippewa, Douglas, Kandiyohi, Lac Qui Parle, Meeker, Morrison,
Pope, Stearns, and Swift Counties over the course of four days.
The findings will help studies of this storm. Thanks to the many
public safety officials and residents who provided valuable
information to the NWS, including some residents whose property
had been hit very hard. Best wishes to all concerned.
