...NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 8/24/14 TORNADO EVENT...

.OVERVIEW...A SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPED WEST OF ST CLOUD IN
EASTERN STEARNS COUNTY AROUND 445 PM. THE STORM GRADUALLY BECAME
BETTER ORGANIZED AS IT ENTERED BENTON COUNTY. A CLASSIC HOOK ECHO
FORMED AS IT CROSSED U.S. HIGHWAY 10 AROUND 525 PM AND BEGAN TO
PRODUCE A TORNADO AT 547 PM 3 MILES SOUTH SOUTHWEST OF MORRILL.
THE TORNADO PRODUCED A NARROW SWATH OF MAINLY TREE DAMAGE ALONG
ITS PATH EAST NORTHEAST...BUT SOME MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS
ALSO NOTED - SUCH AS A ROOF BEING TORN OFF FROM A FARM
OUTBUILDING. THE TORNADO LIFTED 4 MILES WEST NORTHWEST OF RUM
RIVER AT 602 PM.

SURVEY SUMMARY: THIS WAS A WELL PHOTOGRAPHED TORNADO. IT APPEARED
TO BE FAIRLY LARGE...HOWEVER IT HAD DIFFICULTY MAINTAINING CONTACT
WITH THE GROUND. AS A RESULT...THERE WAS ONLY MINOR DAMAGE AND THE
PATH WAS NARROW.

EF SCALE: THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE CLASSIFIES TORNADOES INTO THE
FOLLOWING CATEGORIES.

EF0...WEAK......65 TO 85 MPH
EF1...WEAK......86 TO 110 MPH
EF2...STRONG....111 TO 135 MPH
EF3...STRONG....136 TO 165 MPH
EF4...VIOLENT...166 TO 200 MPH
EF5...VIOLENT...>200 MPH
