...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS/HIGH WINDS

ALTHOUGH NWS HASTINGS RECEIVED LITTLE IN THE WAY OF SEVERE-CRITERIA
HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND REPORTS FROM THE CITY OF KEARNEY DURING
AUGUST...CERTAINLY THE MOST NOTABLE WEATHER EVENT OF THE MONTH WAS
FLASH-FLOODING ON THE LATE EVENING OF THE 8TH INTO THE EARLY MORNING
OF THE 9TH. DURING THIS EVENT...HEAVY RAINFALL OF GENERALLY 3-4
INCHES IN A SHORT TIME INUNDATED THE CITY AND RESULTED IN DOZENS OF
STALLED VEHICLES. IN ADDITION...AT GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL WATER
BROKE THROUGH THE TWO STORY GROUND-TO-CEILING WINDOWS OF THE
CAFETERIA...ALLOWING WATER TO RUSH INTO THE BUILDING. IN TERMS OF
THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS...ONE OF THE HIGHEST MEASURED PEAK GUSTS OF
THE MONTH AT THE AIRPORT WAS 51 MPH FROM THE NORTH-NORTHWEST ON THE
EVENING OF THE 17TH (PLEASE NOTE THIS WAS NOT NECESSARILY THE TRUE
PEAK GUST OF THE MONTH...AS THIS AUTOMATED SYSTEM ONLY TRANSMITS
ROUTINE WIND OBSERVATIONS EVERY 20 MINUTES). NO TORNADOES WERE
CONFIRMED WITHIN BUFFALO COUNTY DURING AUGUST.
