Fire Weather Planning Forecast for SW VA...SE WV and NW NC
National Weather Service Blacksburg VA
954 AM EST Mon Feb 20 2017

.DISCUSSION...

High pressure will build over the region today and remain along
the coast overnight resulting in light and variable winds along
with humidity levels falling to between 25 and 35 percent this
afternoon. The flow will turn more easterly later today and
continue overnight although speeds should be on the light side.
Moisture should gradually increase on Tuesday as winds turn more
southerly ahead of a weak cold front approaching from the west.
The front will bring patchy light rain showers to the area late
Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. The chance of wetting
rain from this feature is small, with the western mountains
having the best potential in seeing a tenth or two of an inch of
rainfall.

Today will again be the best day for prescribed burns this week.
No precipitation is forecast. Skies will be sunny, or the sun will
be filtered through some thin cirrus clouds. If there is a
limiting factor today it will be the winds. Both at twenty feet
and transport levels, they will be on the weak side, and gradually
changing their direction throughout the day as the center of the
ridge axis moves across the area.

Tuesday will have better ventilation as the prevailing flow begins to
increase from the southwest. Minimum relative humidities will
range from 45 to 55 percent, and skies will be mostly cloudy by
the afternoon.

The trend of seeing warm and moist conditions under overall light
winds will linger through late in the week before a cold front
arrives by early in the weekend. This front may bring the next
chance of measurable wetting rainfall outside of scattered late
week showers. Gusty northwest winds and lower humidity will follow
the front for the rest of next weekend.
