PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TULSA OK

...NWS Damage Survey Summary for Eastern Oklahoma and Northwestern
Arkansas April 26-27th Tornadoes - Update 3...

.Update...This statement was updated to include seven additional
tornadoes in eastern Oklahoma and west central Arkansas, namely the
Checotah, Charleston, Hominy, Wynona, Nashoba, Ozark, and Sapulpa
tornadoes.

.Overview...A line of severe thunderstorms moved through eastern
Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas during the evening of April 26th
and early morning hours of April 27th. Very strong low level wind
shear and moderately strong instability ahead of the line promoted
the development of tornadoes from some of the storms embedded in the
line, as well as damaging wind gusts. A number of the damaged areas
were assessed by NWS Tulsa meteorologists on the days following the
event and their findings follow.

Other areas were surveyed where damage occurred, including an area
between Maysville and Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, and south of Pea
Ridge, Arkansas, near Keefeton, Oklahoma, near Copan, Oklahoma, near
Cleveland, Oklahoma, near Mannford, Oklahoma. The damage in these
areas was determined to be from straight-line wind.

Additional investigation continues for this event but the ground
surveys have been concluded. We are still evaluating data for an area
of damage west of Pawhuska and near Rattan, following the ground
surveys for those areas.

Compiling data this event has taken an extensive amount of time due
to the amount of damage and how spread out it was across the region.
Many thanks goes to a number of emergency management officials, the
media, and concerned citizens who have all directed us to damage and
provided photos. Some even provided detailed path descriptions and
maps.
