URGENT - FIRE WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
233 PM PST Thu Dec 14 2017

...RED FLAG WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR MUCH OF LOS ANGELES AND
VENTURA COUNTIES THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING DUE TO GUSTY NORTHEAST
WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY...

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH
SATURDAY EVENING FOR GUSTY NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS AND LOW
RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE SANTA BARBARA COUNTY MOUNTAINS...

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE LATE SATURDAY NIGHT
THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING FOR GUSTY NORTHEAST WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE
HUMIDITY FOR THE LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTY MOUNTAINS AND
VALLEYS...

.DISCUSSION...The extended period of offshore flow will continue
into Friday morning...focused over Los Angeles and Ventura
Counties. The strongest northeast winds are expected through this
evening, with gusts 40 to 50 mph across the Los Angeles and
Ventura county mountains, and between 35 and 45 mph across coastal
and valley areas. These gusty offshore winds will create the
potential for very rapid fire spread, long range spotting, and
extreme fire behavior with existing fires and any new ignitions.
The humidities will remain very dry today and Friday with
widespread single digit humidities, along with very poor overnight
recoveries tonight. This will result in continued critical fire
weather conditions into Friday morning, especially through this
evening.

The Santa Barbara County Mountains (including the upper
elevations of the Thomas Fire) will likely experience near
critical fire weather conditions through this evening with gusts
up to 25 mph combined with single digit humidities. North to
northeast winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph, possibly stronger,
with continued low humidities are likely across the Santa Barbara
county mountains and adjacent foothills late Friday night into
Saturday, prompting the issuance of the Fire Weather Watch. Gusty
northerly winds could surface into the Santa Barbara county south
coast as well, but winds at this time are not expected to be
strong enough to warrant Red Flag conditions. Northeast winds
gusting between 35 and 55 mph combined with low humidities will
bring the potential for critical fire weather conditions across
the mountains and valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura counties
later Saturday night into Sunday.
