THE WEST KERN COUNTY TORNADO OF FEBRUARY 23RD

A COLD-CORE FUNNEL CLOUD TOUCHED DOWN IN WESTERN KERN COUNTY SHORTLY
BEFORE NOON ON MONDAY..FEBRUARY 23RD...BECOMING THE 90TH TORNADO TO
FORM IN THE WFO HANFORD WARNING/FORECAST AREA /CWFA/ SINCE OFFICIAL
STATISTICS BEGAN IN 1949.

THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 10 MILES SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF BLACKWELL`S
CORNER AT 1140 PST...AND HAD AN ESTIMATED DURATION OF 10 MINUTES.
THE ESTIMATED WIDTH OF THE TORNADO WAS 150 FEET. THE ESTIMATED PATH
LENGTH WAS A HALF MILE. BECAUSE THE TORNADO WAS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH
A THUNDERSTORM...IT WAS CLASSIFIED AS A LANDSPOUT WITH AN ESTIMATED
MAGNITUDE OF EF0.

THIS WAS THE 14TH TORNADO TO TOUCH DOWN IN KERN COUNTY SINCE THE
START OF RECORDS...AND OCCURRED ON THE 22ND ANNIVERSARY OF A
TORNADO THAT TOUCHED DOWN IN MCFARLAND.

THE LAST TORNADO TO TOUCH DOWN IN THE WFO HANFORD CWFA WAS ON MAY
6TH 2013...WHEN AN EF0 TORNADO STRUCK WEST OF BAKERSFIELD. THE
FEBRUARY 23RD TORNADO IS THE 73RD CONFIRMED OR ESTIMATED F0/EF0
TORNADO IN THE WFO HANFORD CWFA.

NOTE...DIFFERENCE SOURCES HAVE SITED THE TORNADO AS BEING NEAR
       MCKITTRICK...SOUTHWEST OF BELRIDGE OR NORTHWEST OF TAFT.
