THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON MA HAS CONFIRMED A MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ IN SOUTH DEERFIELD IN FRANKLIN COUNTY MASSACHUSETTS ON JULY 7 2015. A MICROBURST CAUSED DAMAGE AT 452 PM EDT ON HILLSIDE ROAD NEAR THE RIVER ROAD INTERSECTION IN SOUTH DEERFIELD...JUST TO THE NORTH OF THE MOUNT SUGARLOAF STATE RESERVATION. THE MICROBURST WAS ABOUT 2500 FEET LONG AND UP TO 1000 FEET WIDE. SEVERAL TALL PINE TREES WERE SNAPPED OFF AT THE TOP...WHILE SEVERAL OTHER LARGE TREES FELL TAKING DOWN POWER LINES. ALL TREES FELL IN A SOUTH-SOUTHWEST TO NORTH-NORTHEAST DIRECTION. A WITNESS REPORTED HORIZONTAL WINDS AND TREES ALL BENT AND BROKEN IN THE SAME DIRECTION. A GAZEBO WAS BLOWN OFF ITS FOUNDATION IN THE BACKYARD OF ONE HOME. WIND SPEEDS IN THIS MICROBURST WERE ESTIMATED AT 80 TO 90 MPH. THIS INFORMATION CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE AT WEATHER.GOV/BOX. FOR REFERENCE... A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW AREA OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS THAN 5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE.
