Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Taunton MA
1045 AM EST Fri Dec 8 2017

This office issued an Area Forecast Discussion late afternoon and
evening on Wednesday, December 6 that implied no 1200 UTC upper air
observations were available from Alaska. That information was not
correct. There were 1200 UTC upper air observations available from
Alaska on December 6. A fact check indicates that only one 1200 UTC
observation was not taken. Our Alaskan colleagues make every effort
to produce radiosonde observations of the upper atmosphere twice per
day (both 0000 UTC and 1200 UTC) under all weather conditions.
Although staffing shortages may on occasion result in missing
observations, the dedication and perseverance of Alaskan National
Weather Service staff have ensured reliable and high quality
observations twice per day and every day from the vast majority of
sites in the Alaskan network.

Our office in Taunton strives to provide you valuable insight into
the forecast process through our Area Forecast Discussions day after
day. We regret the misinformation we provided in our Wednesday
afternoon and evening Area Forecast Discussions.
