...CONTINUED MILD WINTER THROUGH FEBRUARY...

FEBRUARY 2017 WILL GO DOWN AS THE WARMEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD, JUST
TWO YEARS AFTER THE COLDEST FEBRUARY AND MONTH OF ALL-TIME WAS
RECORDED. THIS FEBRUARY, THE WARMEST FEBRUARY DAY WAS TIED, WHEN THE
TEMPERATURE PEAKED AT 71F ON THE 24TH. THOUGH PRECIPITATION FOR THE
MONTH WAS NEAR NORMAL, SNOW WAS LACKING WITH NO SIGNIFICANT SNOW
STORMS OCCURRED THROUGH THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE THIS MONTH WAS 34.8F WHICH WAS 0.7F DEGREES
WARMER THAN THE PREVIOUS WARMEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD, AND 0.8F
DEGREES WARMER THAN A TYPICAL MARCH. THERE WERE TWO NEW TEMPERATURE
RECORDS ESTABLISHED THIS MONTH, INCLUDING A NEW ALLTIME WARMEST
FEBRUARY DAY. ON THE 24TH AND 25TH, TEMPERATURES OF 71F AND 65F
RESPECTIVELY WERE RECORDED. THE 71F EQUALS THE WARMEST FEBRUARY DAY,
ALSO SET BACK IN 2000. THERE WERE 9 DAYS THIS MONTH THAT TOPPED 50F,
WHICH IS ONE OFF FROM THE RECORD OF 10 SET BACK IN 1976. THERE WERE
JUST 7 DAYS THAT REMAINED BELOW 32F THIS MONTH, TIED FOR 5TH LEAST
ON FEBRUARY RECORD.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS ABOUT A QUARTER OF AN INCH BELOW
NORMAL, WITH 2.26 INCHES RECORDED. MOST OF THIS WAS RAINFALL, AS
JUST 5.0 INCHES OF SNOW FELL. THIS 5.0 INCHES OF SNOW WAS THE 5TH
LEAST SNOWIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. THE WETTEST DAY THIS MONTH WAS
FEBRUARY 7TH, WITH 0.58 INCHES OF RAIN RECORDED. THERE WERE TWO
THUNDERSTORMS THIS MONTH...IN A MONTH THAT TYPICALLY HAS THE FEWEST
NUMBER OF THUNDERSTORMS. THUNDERSTORMS WERE RECORDED ON THE 1ST, AND
ALSO THE 24TH OF THE MONTH.

THE MONTH STARTED OFF WITH A CLIPPER SYSTEM PASSING ACROSS THE
REGION, WITH LAKE EFFECT SNOW FOLLOWING. A FEW RUMBLES OF THUNDER
OCCURRED NEAR THE BUFFALO AIRPORT WITHIN THIS SNOW ON THE 1ST. DRY
AIR LIMITED THE SNOW EAST OF LAKE ERIE, WITH JUST A HALF A FOOT OF
SNOW FALLING IN SPOTS WELL TO THE SOUTH OF BUFFALO. A SECOND PUSH OF
ARCTIC AIR TRIGGERED ANOTHER ROUND OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW ON THE 2ND
THROUGH 4TH OF THE MONTH, THOUGH AGAIN SNOW AMOUNTS ONLY ADDED UP TO
ABOUT A FOOT WELL SOUTH OF BUFFALO. ON THE 18TH, DOWNSLOPE WINDS AND
SUNSHINE BROUGHT A WIND GUST TO 52 MPH AT THE AIRPORT. THE REMAINDER
OF THE MONTH SAW MILD AIR BECOME PLENTIFUL, WITH JUST THREE DAYS
AFTER THE FIRST WEEK OF THE MONTH DROPPING TO OR BELOW NORMAL. FROM
SATURDAY, THE 21ST TO A WEEK LATER ON THE 28TH TEMPERATURES ROSE TO
WELL ABOVE NORMAL. HIGHS IN THE 40S AND 50S EVENTUALLY PEAKED AT 71F
ON THE AFTERNOON OF FRIDAY THE 24TH. TEMPERATURES AGAIN ROSE TO 65F
EARLY SATURDAY MORNING BEFORE A STRONG COLD FRONT PASSED ACROSS THE
REGION.

LAKE ERIE NEVER FROZE THIS YEAR, WITH LAKE TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE
MONTH OF FEBRUARY FLUCTUATING BETWEEN 33 AND 35F.

A SPRING-LIKE FEEL THROUGH MUCH OF THIS LAST METEOROLOGICAL WINTER
MONTH.
