SEPTEMBER 2013 WILL GO DOWN IN THE RECORD BOOKS AS A MONTH WITH FREQUENT SWINGS IN TEMPERATURES...FEATURING A COUPLE OF DAYS WITH MID SUMMER-LIKE HEAT AND HUMIDITY FOLLOWED BY A CHANGE TO MORE FALL-LIKE CONDITIONS WHEN TEMPERATURES GOT COLD ENOUGH FOR FROST ACROSS MANY INLAND LOCATIONS. THUS...WHILE THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 61.4 DEGREES WAS JUST 0.8 DEGREES BELOW THE CLIMATOLOGICAL AVERAGE...THE DAILY TEMPERATURES SHOWED A LOT OF VARIABILITY. THE MONTHLY RAINFALL WAS 3.53 INCHES WHICH IS 0.37 INCH BELOW AVERAGE. MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION THAT FELL ON TEN DAYS WAS MAINLY LIGHT...WITH MOST DAYS SEEING LESS THAN ONE QUARTER INCH OF RAIN. THE EXCEPTION TO THIS TREND OCCURRED ON THE 21ST WHEN A SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT BROUGHT RECORD SETTING RAINFALL TO BUFFALO AND PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN TIER CLOSE TO LAKE ERIE. THE RELATIVELY DRY CONDITIONS THAT PREVAILED FOR MUCH OF THE MONTH RESULTED IN A FAIR AMOUNT OF SUNSHINE WHICH ENDED UP AT 68 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL POSSIBLE. THE LAKE ERIE WATER TEMPERATURE STARTED OUT AT 74 DEGREES AND COOLED TO 66 DEGREES BY THE END OF THE MONTH. THIS IS SLIGHTLY WARMER THAN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE TREND FOR SEPTEMBER. OVERALL...SEPTEMBER WAS A PLEASANT START TO FALL. && TJP $$
