...WINTRY START TO MARCH...THEN MILD...AND FINALLY OUT LIKE A LION...

A MILD MARCH WAS OFFSET BY A COOL FIRST WEEK OF THE MONTH...WITH THE
BULK OF THE MEAGER SNOW FALLING WITHIN THIS FIRST WEEK. SEVERAL
SIGNIFICANT WARM SPELLS BROUGHT A SPRING FEEL ACROSS WESTERN NEW
YORK ALONG WITH SUNNY DAYS. THE MONTH ENDED ON A WINDY NOTE WITH
SEVERAL WIND STORMS HOWLING ACROSS WESTERN NEW YORK.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN MARCH WAS 39.9F DEGREES WHICH PLACED 10TH
WARMEST ALL-TIME. THE FIRST DAY TO REACH 70F DEGREES WAS MARCH
27TH...ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE THE NORMAL DATE. THERE WERE 20 DAYS THAT
AVERAGED ABOVE NORMAL THIS MONTH. THERE WERE 3 NEW TEMPERATURE
RECORDS...ON THE 9TH A RECORD HIGH OF 69F WAS TIED...WHILE THE
LOWEST TEMPERATURE OF 47F DEGREES THAT DAY SET A NEW WARM MINIMUM
FOR THE DATE. TO CLOSE THE MONTH THE LOW TEMPERATURE OF 51F DEGREES
TIED FOR THE WARMEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURE ON THE 31ST.

PRECIPITATION WAS NORMAL THIS MONTH...WITH RAIN THE PRIMARY
PRECIPITATION TYPE. THERE WAS JUST 0.9 OF AN INCH OF SNOW THIS MONTH
WHICH PLACED 6 LEAST SNOWIEST ON RECORD. IT WAS ALSO THE THIRD TIME
IN THE LAST 8 MARCHES THAT THERE WAS LESS THAN AN INCH OF SNOW FOR
THE MONTH. PRECIPITATION WAS EVENLY SPREAD THROUGH THE MONTH...AND
THE WETTEST DAY WAS ON THE 10TH WHEN 0.80 INCHES OF RAIN FELL.

A WINTRY START TO THE MONTH INCLUDED A MIX OF SNOW...SLEET AND
FREEZING RAIN ON THE 1ST THROUGH THE 2ND. ANOTHER WINTER STORM
SYSTEM PASSED TO THE SOUTH OF WESTERN NEW YORK ON THE 3RD AND
4TH...BRINGING THE FINAL MEASURABLE SNOW TO THE BUFFALO AREA FOR THE
MONTH. FOLLOWING A COOL AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE THAT SETTLED OVER THE
EASTERN GREAT LAKES REGION FOR THE FIRST WEEKEND OF THE MONTH...THE
AIR TEMPERATURES STARTED TO INCREASE BEHIND AN AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE
WITH ABOVE NORMAL WARMTH REACHING WESTERN NEW YORK BY THE 7TH. THIS
WARMTH PEAKED AHEAD OF COLD FRONT...WITH RECORD WARMTH ON THE 9TH
BEFORE A STEADY PERIOD OF RAIN FELL OVER THE REGION ON THE 10TH WITH
THE COLD FRONT. TEMPERATURES REMAINED ABOVE NORMAL THROUGH MID-MONTH
BEFORE A COLD FRONT DROPPED SOUTHWARD ACROSS WESTERN NEW YORK WITH
SCATTERED RAIN AND WET SNOW SHOWERS. COOLER AIR IN THE WAKE OF THE
FRONT LEFT THE THIRD WEEKEND OF THE MONTH WITH BELOW NORMAL AIR
TEMPERATURES. TEMPERATURES BEGAN TO WARM THE FOLLOWING WEEK...THOUGH
IT DID REMAIN UNSETTLE FROM THE 22ND THROUGH 25TH WITH PERIODIC
LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS. THE WARMEST DAY THIS MONTH WAS EASTER
SUNDAY...WHEN BRIGHT SUNNY SKIES SENT AFTERNOON AIR TEMPERATURES TO
70F. THE FINAL DAYS OF THE MONTH ENDED ON THE WINDY NOTE...WITH
SEVERAL WIND STORMS PASSING THROUGH. THERE WAS A MODERATE LAKE
SEICHE EVENT ON THE 29TH WITH LAKE ERIE RISING TO JUST OVER 7 FEET
AT THE BUFFALO HARBOR.

LAKE ERIE...WHICH NEVER FROZE OVER THIS WINTER...WARMED FROM 34F AT
THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH TO 40F BY MONTHS CLOSE. STRONGEST WIND
GUSTS WERE AT THE END OF THE MONTH WITH 56 MPH RECORDED ON THE
28TH...AND 51 MPH REGISTERED ON THE 31ST.

IN ALL A MILD AND RELATIVELY SNOW FREE MONTH.
