...COOL AND WET MONTH FOR WESTERN NEW YORK...

SUMMER`S HEAT WAS HARD TO COME BY THIS MONTH AS ANY BUILDING WARMTH
WAS QUICKLY ERASED BY A SURGE OF COOLER AIR. THOUGH COOL FOR THE
MONTH...THERE WERE STILL A NUMBER OF COMFORTABLE DAYS FOR MOST
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. THUNDERSTORMS...SOME WITH TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS
BROUGHT FLOODING AND HIGHER THAN NORMAL JULY RAINFALL.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 68.6F WAS TWO AND A HALF DEGREES BELOW
THE NORMAL OF 71.1F. THERE WERE NO 90 DEGREE DAYS THIS MONTH AND
THERE WERE ONLY 8 DAYS IN THE 80S. THIS MONTH WAS THE COOLEST JULY
SINCE 2009 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS JUST 66.9F AND THE
NUMBER OF 80 DEGREE DAYS STOOD AT JUST TWO. THERE WERE NO RECORDS
THIS MONTH AND THE WARMEST DAY OCCURRED ON THE 1ST WHEN THE
TEMPERATURE REACHED 86F.

PRECIPITATION TOTALED 5.45 INCHES AT THE AIRPORT. THIS TOTAL IS A
SOLID TWO INCHES ABOVE NORMAL...AND ALL RAINFALL FELL AS NON
TROPICAL. DAYS WITH PRECIPITATION WAS SPREAD EVENLY THROUGH THE
MONTH. HEAVY STORMS BROUGHT FIVE DAYS THIS MONTH WITH HALF INCH OR
MORE OF RAINFALL. THESE FIVE JULY DAYS ARE TWO SHY OF THE RECORD OF
SEVEN DAYS WHICH OCCURRED IN 1992...AND IS THE SECOND MOST NUMBER OF
DAYS IN JULY SINCE THE MOVE TO THE AIRPORT IN THE SUMMER OF 1943.
THERE WERE NINE DAYS WITH THUNDER THIS MONTH...AND DESPITE ALL THE
HEAVY STORMS THERE WERE NO DAILY PRECIPITATION RECORDS.

THE OVERALL UPPER LEVEL PATTERN THIS MONTH FEATURED A TROUGH
EXTENDING SOUTHWARD FROM HUDSON BAY ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION.
THIS ALLOWED FOR COOL AIR FROM THE NORTH TO PERIODICALLY DROP
SOUTHWARD ACROSS THE EASTERN GREAT LAKES REGION. WHILE THERE WERE
COOL PERIODS THERE WERE ALSO BRIEF STRETCHES OF SUMMER-TIME WARMTH.
JULY`S WARMEST DAY CAME ON THE 1ST AND THIS WARMTH CONTINUED INTO
THE 2ND DAY OF THE MONTH WITH JUST SOME SCATTERED EVENING SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS. A SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT BROUGHT A LITTLE MORE
ACTIVITY ON THE 3RD...WITH SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS CLEARING THE
REGION BY THE START OF THE 4TH OF JULY. A SPLENDID 3-DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND
ENSUED WITH PLENTY OF SUNSHINE AND SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES. A WARM
FRONT LIFTED NORTHWARD ACROSS THE EASTERN GREAT LAKES REGION ON THE
7TH AND THUNDERSTORMS ALONG THIS BOUNDARY SOAKED BUFFALO WITH
JUST OVER AN INCH OF RAINFALL. THE FIRST MAJOR OUTBREAK OF SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS THIS MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 8TH. A MINIATURE DERECHO
UNFOLDED TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND BROUGHT WIDESPREAD DAMAGE ACROSS
SOUTHERN NEW YORK STATE...AND INTO THE GENESEE VALLEY. MUCH OF THE
BUFFALO METRO AREA WAS SPARED DAMAGE FROM THIS SYSTEM.

THROUGH THE MIDDLE PORTION OF JULY AIRMASSES ALTERNATED BETWEEN
WARM AND MUGGY AND COOL AND DRY. THUNDERSTORMS AS THESE
AIRMASSES CLASHED OCCURRED THROUGH THE MONTH...THOUGH MOST STORMS WERE
RELATIVELY TAME. A FEW STORMS DEVELOPED ON THE 14TH ON AN OLD
OUTFLOW BOUNDARY AND DID BRING LOCALIZED HAIL AND HEAVY
DOWNPOURS...WITH SOME DAMAGE ACROSS THE NORTHERN FINGER LAKES
REGION. TEMPERATURES WARMED AGAIN WITH SUMMER`S WARMTH OF
TEMPERATURES IN THE 80S FOUND ACROSS THE REGION FROM THE 21ST
THROUGH THE 23RD. AHEAD OF A DEEP UPPER LEVEL LONG WAVE TROUGH
MOISTURE LADEN STORMS BROUGHT HEAVY RAINS TO THE BUFFALO METRO AREA
ON THE NIGHT OF THE 27TH AND LATER THROUGH THE DAY ON THE 28TH. THE
MONTH FINISHED COOL WITH A FALLISH FEEL TO THE AIR.

LAKE ERIE FLUCTUATED BETWEEN 71 AND 73 DEGREES THIS MONTH WHICH IS
NORMAL. SUNSHINE WAS A LITTLE ABOVE NORMAL AS 20 MOSTLY SUNNY DAYS
THIS MONTH BROUGHT SUNSHINE TO FOUR PERCENT ABOVE NORMAL. WINDS WERE
NORMAL THIS MONTH AND THE STRONGEST GUST OF 56 MPH OCCURRED WITHIN A
THUNDERSTORM ON JULY 8TH.

OVERALL A COOL AND WET MONTH FOR WESTERN NEW YORK.
