PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CARIBOU ME
440 PM EDT MON AUG 1 2016

...NOTED WARM BIAS WITH TEMPERATURES BEING RECORDED WITH THE
AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVATION SYSTEM (ASOS) AT BANGOR...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STAFF AT THE CARIBOU OFFICE HAVE
BEEN INCREASINGLY AWARE OF A WARM BIAS OF TEMPS FROM THE BANGOR
ASOS...WHICH IS THE BASIS OF CLIMATE DATA COLLECTED FOR THE
BANGOR AREA. THIS BIAS...WHICH HAS RAN ON AVERAGE ABOUT 3 DEGREES
WARMER THAN OTHER NEARBY STATIONS SURROUNDING BANGOR BEGAN
IMPACTING MONTHLY AVERAGES THIS PAST MAY...AND HAS CONTINUED UNTIL
TO THIS CURRENT DAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN IMPACTED A LITTLE
MORE THAN LOW TEMPERATURES.

ELECTRONIC TECHNICIAN STAFF WILL BE WORKING TO RESOLVE THE
ISSUE(S) CAUSING THE BIAS OVER THE REST OF THIS WEEK. ONCE WE
BEGIN RECEIVING UNBIASED TEMPERATURES AFTER A SUCCESSFUL REPAIR...
STAFF AT THE CARIBOU OFFICE WILL SUBTRACT A CORRECTION FACTOR TO
ALL HIGH AND LOW TEMPERATURES RECORDED FROM THE BANGOR ASOS FROM
MAY 1ST 2016 AND WILL POST THE NEW STATS FROM THIS PAST MAY...JUNE
AND JULY.

WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE LENGTH OF TIME IT HAS TAKEN TO VALIDATE THIS
PROBLEM AND THE IMPACT THE WARM BIAS HAS HAD WITH INTERPRETING
MONTHLY BANGOR CLIMATE STATS BY MANY USERS...ESPECIALLY IN THE
MEDIA. WE THANK THOSE THAT HAVE HELPED US BECOME MORE AWARE OF
THIS PROBLEM AND ASK ALL FOR CONTINUED PATIENCE OVER THE NEXT FEW
DAYS WHILE WE TRY TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
