...DISCUSSION...

CONCORD NEW HAMPSHIRE TIED AS THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD WITH AN
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 49.2 DEGREES FOR 2012. THE OLD RECORD
STOOD FOR 134 YEARS...DATING BACK TO 1878. THE 49.2 DEGREES WAS
2.8 DEGREES WARMER THAN NORMAL.

THE WARM YEAR WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY CONCORD EXPERIENCING ITS WARMEST
SPRING EVER. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE METEOROLOGICAL SPRING,
MARCH THROUGH MAY, WAS 49.7 DEGREES. THIS WAS 5.0 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL AND TOPPED THE OLD RECORD WARMEST SPRING OF 49.2 DEGREES
WHICH WAS SET IN 1921 AND AGAIN IN 2010.

ALL THREE SPRING MONTHS WERE ABOVE NORMAL, BUT IT WAS MARCH
THAT HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT. CONCORD HAD ITS WARMEST MARCH IN
THE PAST 144 YEARS WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 42.1 DEGREES.
THIS WAS AN AMAZING 9.0 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL.

NOT SURPRISINGLY CONCORD SET SEVERAL RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES IN
MARCH. IN FACT, THERE WERE SEVEN DAYS WITH RECORD HIGHS INCLUDING
FIVE IN A ROW FROM THE 18TH THROUGH THE 22ND. ALSO, THE HIGH FOR
THIS FIVE DAY STRETCH REACHED 80 DEGREES OR WARMER EACH DAY.

BEFORE THIS STRETCH OF WARM WEATHER THE MOST CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH
HIGHS OF 80 OR WARMER IN CONCORD DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH IS JUST
TWO. CONCORD REACHED 80 OR WARMER ON MARCH 28TH AND 29TH IN 1945
AND ON MARCH 30TH AND 31ST IN 1998.

CONCORD HAS ONLY REACHED 80 OR WARMER 13 TIMES IN THE MONTH OF MARCH
AND FIVE OF THOSE HAVE OCCURRED THIS YEAR. THE 84 DEGREE HIGH ON
THE 22ND IS THE 5TH WARMEST EVER IN MARCH. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE
IN CONCORD IN MARCH IS 89 DEGREES SET ON MARCH 31, 1998.

THE 81 DEGREE HIGH TEMPERATURE ON MARCH 18TH, THE FIRST DAY OF THIS
RECORD BREAKING FIVE DAY PERIOD, WAS THE EARLIEST DATE IN THE YEAR
FOR CONCORD TO REACH THE 80 DEGREE MARK. THE OLD RECORD FOR THE
EARLIEST 80 DEGREE READING WAS MARCH 23, 1938 WHEN THE TEMPERATURE
REACHED 80 DEGREES.

CONCORD HAS NEVER SET RECORD HIGHS FOR FIVE DAYS IN A ROW FOR ANY
MONTH OF THE YEAR. IT HAS SEEN RECORD HIGHS SET ON THREE CONSECUTIVE
DAYS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS...MOST RECENTLY FROM JULY 19TH THROUGH THE
21ST IN 1977.

FEBRUARY WAS ALSO A VERY WARM MONTH WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
THAT WAS 5.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE FEBRUARY AVERAGE OF 30.1
DEGREES RANKED AS THE 5TH WARMEST EVER RECORDED.

ONLY THREE MONTHS IN 2012 HAD BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THEY WERE
JUNE, SEPTEMBER AND NOVEMBER. ALL OTHER MONTHS WERE ABOVE NORMAL.

CONCORD`S TEMPERATURES RANGED FROM A HIGH OF 96 DEGREES ON JUNE 20TH
TO A LOW OF MINUS 7 ON JANUARY 22ND. CONCORD HAD 16 DAYS WITH HIGHS
OF 90 OR WARMER WHICH WAS 6 DAYS MORE THAN NORMAL FOR A YEAR. THERE
WERE ONLY FOUR DAYS WITH LOWS OF ZERO OR COLDER...THREE LESS THAN
NORMAL.

ONE OF THE MAIN WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR CONCORD IN 2012 WAS THE IMPACT
OF SUPERSTORM HURRICANE SANDY IN LATE OCTOBER. THE STORM PRODUCED
HEAVY RAIN AND HIGH WINDS WITH DOWNED TREES AND POWER OUTAGES. CONCORD
HAD A PEAK GUST OF 55 MPH ON THE 29TH FROM THE STORM AND NEARLY TWO
INCHES /1.99 INCHES/ OF RAIN ON THE 29TH AND 30TH.

THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A VERY DRY NOVEMBER IN CONCORD WITH JUST 0.50
INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH. IN FACT THE HALF INCH
OF PRECIPITATION TIED 1939 AS THE DRIEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD. NOVEMBER
WAS ALSO THE DRIEST MONTH OF 2012. PRECIPITATION RECORDS IN CONCORD
BEGAN IN 1871.

HERE IS A LIST OF THE DRIEST NOVEMBERS ON RECORD AT CONCORD...

PRECIPITATION WAS JUST UNDER 40 INCHES /39.96 INCHES/. THIS WAS
0.65 INCHES BELOW NORMAL AND WAS THE 58TH WETTEST YEAR ON RECORD.
THE WETTEST MONTH WAS AUGUST WITH 6.34 INCHES OF RAIN WHICH WAS
MORE THAN DOUBLE THE NORMAL RAINFALL FOR THAT MONTH.

THE MOST PRECIPITATION IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD WAS EXACTLY TWO AND
A HALF INCHES ON AUGUST 10TH. THERE WERE TWO OTHER 24 HOUR PERIODS
WITH TWO INCHES OF PRECIPITATION. THEY WERE APRIL 22ND AND 23RD
WITH 2.05 INCHES AND JUNE 2ND AND 3RD WITH 1.99 INCHES OF RAIN.
THE 1.99 INCHES FROM SUPERSTORM SANDY OCCURRED OVER A LONGER THAN
24 HOUR PERIOD OF TIME.

THIS WAS TWO FEET /24.4 INCHES/ BELOW NORMAL. THE SNOWIEST
MONTH WAS DECEMBER WITH 13.4 INCHES OF SNOW, FOLLOWED BY
JANUARY WITH 10.2 INCHES. WITH JUST 3.0 INCHES OF SNOW,
FEBRUARY WAS THE 8TH LEAST SNOWIEST FEBRUARY IN 145 YEARS.

THE BIGGEST SNOWSTORM WAS 7.1 INCHES OF SNOW ON MARCH 1ST. THE
NEXT BIGGEST SNOW EVENT WAS 5.0 INCHES ON DECEMBER 27TH. THE
