...National Weather Service Cheyenne to Adjust Wind Hazard
Thresholds for the Western Nebraska Panhandle...

Effective at 5 PM Mountain Standard Time (MST) Tuesday, January
31, the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Cheyenne,
Wyoming will cease issuing Wind Advisories for the western
Nebraska Panhandle. Historically, wind advisories have been issued
for sustained winds of 30 to 39 MPH and wind gusts between 45 and
57 MPH.

The High Plains National Weather Service Offices solicited input
from users in a public online survey to evaluate the impacts of
winds meeting advisory criteria. Input gained from users revealed
that few take action to mitigate the effect of such winds, since
they occur so commonly in the High Plains. Wind hazards should be
issued only for meteorological events that are rare and pose a
threat to safety or have an economic impact, and user input
showed that wind advisories do not meet this standard in the
western Nebraska Panhandle.

High Wind Warnings will continue to be issued for events when
sustained winds of 40 MPH or more and/or gusts of 58 MPH or more
are expected. Forecasts of surface winds and wind gusts for the
next seven days are available over All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio
and in graphical or text format online at
http://www.weather.gov/cys/. Winds meeting warning criteria are
highlighted in the Hazardous Weather Outlook for easy reference.
