...IMPROVEMENT IN THE DROUGHT...

OVERVIEW...

THE LATEST DROUGHT MONITOR ISSUED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE ON JULY 1ST SHOWS A CONTINUING DROUGHT ACROSS MUCH OF
SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS. AREAS ALONG AND WEST FROM SCOTT
COUNTY TO MEADE COUNTY ARE IN D3 (EXTREME) DROUGHT. AREAS EAST OF
THIS LINE ARE IN D2 (SEVERE) DROUGHT CONDITIONS. YEARLY
PRECIPITATION ANOMALIES ARE +1.56 INCHES AT GARDEN CITY...+1.71
INCHES AT DODGE CITY...AND -3.11 INCHES AT MEDICINE LODGE. THESE
VALUES ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REST OF THE REGION.

CURRENT ENSO STATE...

AN EL NINO WATCH IS IN EFFECT WITH A 70 PERCENT CHANCE OF EL NINO
CONDITIONS THIS SUMMER. THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER IS EXPECTING
NEAR NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION THROUGH THE REST OF THE
SUMMER.

HYDROLOGIC IMPACTS...

RECENT RAINFALL HAS LEAD TO WATER FLOWS IN RIVERS AND STREAMS.
LOCAL FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN ASSOCIATION WITH ADDITIONAL HEAVY
THUNDERSTORM PRECIPITATION.

FIRE DANGER IMPACTS...

FUELS ARE NOT SUPPORTIVE FOR ACTIVE FIRE BEHAVIOR.

AGRICULTURAL IMPACTS...

SOIL MOISTURE DEFICITS ARE NEAR TO SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL (2.3 INCHES
FOR WESTERN KANSAS PER CPC THROUGH JUNE 2014).

OUTLOOK...

THE SEASONAL DROUGHT OUTLOOK EXPECTS IMPROVEMENT IN THE DROUGHT.
