DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE QUAD CITIES IA IL
252 PM CDT THU MAY 15 2014

...DROUGHT CONDITIONS CONTINUED TO SLOWLY IMPROVE OVER THE PAST
TWO MONTHS...

SYNOPSIS...

EARLY SPRING RAINFALL SINCE THE BEGINNING OF MARCH HAS HELPED
REPLENISH SOIL MOISTURE SUPPLIES AND INCREASE STREAM FLOWS TO NEAR
OR ABOVE NORMAL LEVELS.

LOCAL AREA AFFECTED...

MODERATE DROUGHT CONTINUES OVER A SMALL AREA IN SOUTHEAST IOWA.
SURROUNDING THIS AREA AND EXTENDING INTO NORTHWEST ILLINOIS AND
NORTHEAST MISSOURI IS AN AREA OF ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS.

SOME KNOWN IMPACTS IN THE LOCAL AREA...

LOCAL/STATE/FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ACTIONS...CHECK WITH SPECIFIC
AGENCIES FOR UP TO DATE DETAILS.

NO REPORTS.

SOIL MOISTURE CONDITIONS.

TOP SOIL MOISTURE SUPPLIES ARE GENERALLY ADEQUATE. SUB-SOIL
MOISTURE SUPPLIES ARE SHORT IN A FEW AREAS...THOUGH THERE ARE
REPORTS THAT DRAIN TILES ARE RUNNING WHICH SUGGESTS ADEQUATE
MOISTURE FOR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES IN MOST AREAS AT THIS TIME.

AGRICULTURAL IMPACTS.

NONE.

RIVER AND STREAM FLOW CONDITIONS.

RIVER LEVELS ARE NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS THE AREA.

GROUND WATER IMPACTS.

SHALLOW GROUNDWATER WELLS ARE RUNNING NEAR TO BELOW NORMAL.

FIRE DANGER IMPACTS.

WITH WARM WEATHER OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS...VEGETATION HAS GREENED
UP REDUCING THE THREAT OF FIRES.

ECOLOGICAL IMPACTS.

NO REPORTS.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE INFORMATION...

CLIMATE SUMMARY.

PRECIPITATION ACROSS THE AREA SINCE MARCH 1 TALLIED BETWEEN 6 AND
8 INCHES WHICH IS NEAR NORMAL. MEANWHILE...TEMPERATURES AVERAGED
3-4 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. SINCE IT IS EARLY IN THE GROWING SEASON...
THIS EXCESS OF PRECIPITATION OVER WHAT IS NEEDED BY VEGETATION HAS
ALLOWED REPLENISHMENT OF SOIL MOISTURE SUPPLIES AS IS TYPICAL IN
SPRING.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK.

OTHER THAN A DRY PERIOD DURING THE WEEKEND...A CHANCE OF RAIN PERSISTS
IN THE FORECAST THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS. TEMPERATURES WILL TEND COOLER
THAN NORMAL FOR MID MAY.

FOR WEEK TWO...MAY 23-29...PROBABILITIES FAVOR NEAR TO BELOW
NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL.

THE SEASONAL OUTLOOK FOR JUNE...JULY AND AUGUST INDICATES NEAR TO
BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND NO INDICATION FAVORING EITHER ABOVE
OR BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL.

HYDROLOGIC OUTLOOK.

RIVER LEVELS WILL HOLD STEADY OR FALL SLIGHTLY DURING THE NEXT WEEK.

NEXT ISSUANCE.

THIS WILL BE THE LAST RELEASE UNTIL DROUGHT CONDITIONS
SIGNIFICANTLY WORSEN.
