LONG PERIOD SWELL CAN SHARPEN INTO LARGE BREAKING WAVES IN SHOALING AREAS. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR WAVES TO BREAK MUCH FARTHER FROM SHOALING AREAS THAN IS NORMALLY EXPERIENCED.
